i will try and get some weights on the gates..they are not heavy duty gates very light to move.....Quote:

the weights listed for those look ok as long as your gates are not cast iron if you can get the set for that price go for it, cant see a brand so i cant look up or ask one of our techs what they think.
isnt this why most people have kids? :-P

bump gate look ok...but it look like you may need to have a single gate....I have two gates that need to be opened. and depending on whether I was successful with the other electric gates i said above the bump gate I think would be more expensive.
I would think a car battery sunk into the ground with an el cheapo trickle solar panel say a $50.00 one would get you going. It should be good for a couple of openings a day.
Hi a mate of mine had a system that used an old tyre patially inflated on its rim buried into thr ground, this was hooked up to a ram designed to work with compressed air. He used to drive onto the tyre, wait a couple of secs while the weight of the vehicle operated the ram and opened the gate. There was a return valve involved that stopped the gate closing quickly.
Saw it working and was impressed, the only drama was it only worked one way, if you were leaving the property you had to get out and open the gate and suck the air into the ram. This required a bit of effort.
Must be a way of developing this so it works both ways and instead of air you could use water or oil. Or simply have an in gate and an out gate????
Most of the equipment could be sourced from car and truck wreakers at not a lot of cost.
Or I used to have a gate the I nudged with the bull bar forcing it to swing open while quickly driveing through befor it swung shut due to the way it was hung. Took a bit of timing but worked well for years. Have one for in and one for out never have to get out to open gates again.

Swing farm gates with an automated opener aren't uncommon. They just have to be able to swing both ways. The best systems I've used have been the simplest and have all been mechanical without electronics. The key to any good gate operation is to make sure they don't sage, so good solid hinges and gateposts are essential.
Sliding gates on a rural boundary would be a real nuisance as they have to slide somewhere (obviously), usually along a track, and that has to be kept clear.
Keep it simple.
You'll see this type around: http://www.bumpgates.com/ but there are variations I've seen that do a double gate. Can't remember who though.
