anyone know much about automatic gates?

    Hi Guys

Since moving into the new house we would like to get some automatic gates...we have two metal double gates at the end of the drive..We have only lived here a week and are over opening them and shutting them all the time.

(they need to be shut otherwise dogs can get out on to the road)

So I have come across some auto gate kits for double gates around 400bux which doesn't seem too bad, however Ian would really like solar powered ones. partly because he would like most things to be solar but mostly as he doesn't want to dig up the drive to lay a power cable down to the gates. the solar kits are $700+ which at the moment we just cant do!

so I was wondering is it possible to buy the 400bux one and convert it to solar? what would need to be done do you think? anyone done this to there own that could give us some sort of tutorial?

    any help would be appreciated.

    Lou

I'm in the same boat at the moment - have just bought a 1.6 acre property. I'm in and out a fair bit during the day and the idea of a solar gate is looking good as it has to be kept shut to keep the dog in.

So far these are the two best ones I've seen:

    http://www.solartronics.com.au/

The Gate Force one looks like the best IMO so far...

I know that doesn't really answer your question, but I don't see why you couldn't convert a gate from mains power to solar - only issue is going to be 240 to 12 volt.

    400 bux?

I have a gate near my shed which I have to open/close.
I am psyching myself for the $900 solar kit (but dont need solar- the shed is right there).
Where did you find the $400 setup?

The only problem is if the motor for the gates is 240volts if they are 12 volts then but a solar panel and charge the battery from it not the mains. one important thing do not buy cheap hydraulic openers as they dont last get electric motors with gears on a track easier to fix if there are problems

Not much help to you, but a mate of mine wanted automatic gates for over 20 years (he's a poser). Within 24 hours of installing them, his wife backed through them, while they were closed.

    swing open or slide open?

power open gravity return? vise versa? power both ways?

    electro mechanical or electro hydraulic?

are you willing to do some self fabrication to save some money?

have you thought about water operated ones?

Ive helped out on a couple of installs and I like the type with the gravity return setup because usually they are the easiest to manually operate if the power goes out.

I like the concept of the water operated ones. basically a bottom fill bucket thats hooked up to a rope to open the gates. Turn on a non positive displacement pump and it fills up the bucket from the bottom that opens the gate, when the pump gets turned off the water drains out and the gates gravity close.

swing gates cuts down on your options as you will need to go with hydraulic rams, go over size as if to small you can blow the seals pushing heavy gates the switch gear is what lets them down how do you want to operate them ? remote buttons or code pad remotes are the cheapest. if you have an idea on the weight of the gates i can get some pricing (wholesale)
