Petrol can explosion badly burns worker
November 9, 2009 - 5:49PM
A 42-year-old man suffered serious burns when vapours from a petrol can opened in the heat of the day caused an explosion at a construction site.
Paramedics were called to the scene at Redgum Drive, Dandenong South about 1.20pm to find petrol used to refuel a generator on a ute tray had ignited.
Paramedic Steve Wood said crews found the man in significant pain.
"He was opening a can of petrol which had pressurised in today's heat and it burst violently out of the can on to a generator causing an explosion," Mr Wood said.
The man sustained serious burns to his forearms, hands and lower legs and was taken to The Alfred hospital in a serious but stable condition.
WorkSafe and fire investigators are examining the scene.
