Thanks John. We're being quoted in the region of NZ$4500 each way for shipping which at 25% depreciation equates to a $32,000 total spend on a vehicle/camper in Aussie. Maybe the shipping costs not looking so bad afterall :(

Thanks. Maybe a long term hire for the camper is not a bad option too. We were thinking that we might mix it up a little during the trip and tow a camper for some of it and a caravan for other parts. Long term hiring would give us options.

For the vehicle though we'd prefer to buy, especially given the damage risks during the trip. I'd prefer not to have to explain myself to anyone else (other than to my wife & kids of course) whenever I stuffed up :)

Thanks. Yep, there's no doubt the trip will cost us it's just the more we loose on the vehicle the less time we can travel.

Dear I say it but would I be better in Aussie to consider a Toyota (:wasntme:), do they depreciation less in comparison. We'd be OK to spend a little more if it meant the depreciation cost overall was less.

A good point. We will be putting on a lot of k's on during the year. I think this would favour perhaps buying a high miler to start with so the addition wouldn't be so noticeable to the resale difference. Maybe a newer high mileage D3 might hold it's value better.

Because the vehicle import duty is less in NZ (we have no new vehicle industry to protect), the streets a awash with secondhand import 4wd's so I think the likelihood of turning a profit would be slim, especially with the shipping cost across the ditch.

I wasn't aware of that import restriction into NZ (although it wouldn't surprise me). The flow of secondhand 4wd's into the country has slowed but I thought it was a mixture of the economic downturn and the fact that we're now competing with rich Russian's on the international markets for the secondhand vehicles coming out Asia.

I was aware of the rules around importing into Aussie. I think I'll steer clear of that although you never know, we might end up staying. You guys wouldn't mind a few more Kiwi's turning up would you? :D

We bought a 1994 300tdi 130 and sold it 3 years later for a $2000 profit.
(then bought a 2004 Td5 130)
I think the Defenders seem to hold their value a bit more than the Disco's.
Disco's are way more comfortable though!:)

Melbourne has as many landies as anywhere else, plenty of Discos and RRs and Sports on the road, Defenders and series are a little less common.

Look here LAND ROVER DISCOVERY Cars For Sale in Victoria - carsales.com.au - carsales.com.au I found 71 Discos in the Melbourne area.

I don't know of any one car yard that I would recommend but I do know a fussy LR mechanic.

Thanks Fraser.

We have a 110 here in NZ so we're familiar with the Defender and would be happy to go that way if we could find a nice truck, especially a 130 - with decent Air Con!! One thought we had was to ship the "extras" we already have off our Defender here in NZ (winch, lock diffs, radios etc) and transplant them onto a donor vehicle in Aussie. We'll be shipping camping gear anyway. After the trip we could remove them again, put the donor vehicle back the way it was and ship the bits back to NZ. Most things only take a handful of bolts to swap. Any interesting thought.

Are the rear seats in the crewcab 130 the same as the 110? Are the mountings the same? I have a set of high back seats in my 110 here and the kids love them. Maybe I could ship them too if the mountings are similar?
