    Depreciation in resale value

I'd appreciate your thoughts on vehicle resale depreciation in Australia that might be "reasonably expected" over say a 12 month period. In particular, a $25K D2 with a $15K camper trailer.

We're NZ based and are planning a drive around Aussie for a year or so. Shipping our vehicle across the ditch is looking expensive so I was wandering how much it's likely to cost us to do the buy and sell thing instead.

    Cheers, Landieman

    It "depends".
The D2 we'd need more info on the year, fuel type, etc you are looking at.
Camper trailers tend to hold their price fairly well if they are a known brand.

Of course if you can buy/sell privately the loss is going to be less.
Plenty of people on here would put their hand up to check out vehicles/campers for you.

For that period, assuming the vehicle is looked after, a major part of the drop will be the difference between wholesale and retail prices - that is, what a dealer will sell for compared to what they will buy for. For both the camper and the D2 this could be as high as 25%.

Of course, you can minimise this both when buying and selling by going private, but this is not likely to be very practical for you coming in from NZ.

Who knows, you do it right and may even come out on top.

We had a relative come from Germany and bought a car here, sold it 7 months later, well i did for him as he ran out of time and made $1000 on top of what the car cost him.
He spend $2k on getting it serviced and some spare tyres plus fuel of course and one last service and detail.
he also picked up people from Hostels around the place wo in turn paid for some fuel.

Worked out well. I loaned him my camper I had at the time for $500 and he was happy.

I do believe you can hire them here.

I wouldn't think you'd lose too much on the camper but I think you'd lose a reasonable amount on the $25k Disco2. It is a Land Rover after all.
Just factor it in as the cost of a fantastic 12 month holiday

I'd suggest you would drop 15% if you do 15,000km. More k's = higher depreciation, less k's = ..well you get it

What are they worth in NZ? Is it a possibility you could buy and use here, then take it over there and maybe get enough to pay for your holiday or even a modest profit.

In New Zealand you cannot import/sell ANY secondhand diesel car/light truck,4x4,something about being "green".Can now only buy in NZ new Diesels,no imports. Also hard here in Australia to bring in from NZ a personal import and sell it,unless you can prove to the motor import guys in Aussie that you intend to live here. The camper trailers can be moved between country's and sold ok.

Agree with the above particularly the camper depreciation. D2 or any orther $25k car, in two years it would be worth $20k without putting a k's on it, factor in some additional k's and then it depends on the total, over 200k and I'd say you would be looking at $15k or less under 150k probably $18k.

Disclaimer: I am not in the 2nd hand car market so could be way off.

Because we'd be buying and selling in Aussie, we'll be considering resale as a big part of the purchase decision. We'd even consider a non Land Rover if the resale was a big enough issue. If there was a particalur year/model that was suitable and would hold it's value better we'd consider it.

And yes, we'll definitely seek help from AULRO members on the ground to check any options that come up. I'd be happy to return the favour if anyone was coming east.

    Thanks again for the reply.
