i had to jump out of the car yesterday when abc brisbane were inviting callers to discuss

Veterans upset by Last Post ringtone - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

thoughts...............i might make a donation to the RSL as i wont be downloading

i did have reveille on my mobile and used it for my morning alarm......it definitely made you jump out of bed, ended up using something a little quieter

I am not a veteran, but I think that anything that helps remind people of the sacrifice they made for us to live a free life is a good thing. I think it's a good way of reaching people that might not normally be aware of the significance of Rememberance Day.

And if the money from purchasing the ringtone goes to the RSL, even better. They do so much for their community...

The Last Post stirs some pretty powerful emotions in most veterans... There is certainly a time and place for solemn rememberance, but if you were an ageing vet would you want to face that reminder on the bus to the doctors? or as you sit in the pub? or any other scenario where you are trying as best you can to get on with your daily life?

Alternatively, do we want people to become immune to the mood conveyed by the playing of the Last Post?

    That is true...

What is wrong with a phone that goes beep, ring, or ding dong or other such electronical sound?

Music ringtones are not only annoying when the person has no taste (often) but you can't hear them over background noise anyway.

    2 examples spring to mind...

a colleague who has "the Time Warp" as his message tone - the full length version at full volume. He constantly leaves his phone on his desk and wanders off and everytime he gets a message, we all have to put up with the ****ing time warp for 4 minutes and 8 seconds...

My mother in law records clips from TV shows and uses them as ring tones. Problem is, almost invariably the recording is so distorted that it just sounds like a dying porpoise scraping it's teeth down a chalkboard...

I believe there is a time and place for things and although I can appreciate the RSL "using technology" to reach the younger generation, I agree with Shonky and don't think the Last Post should be a ringtone.

I couldn't say I agree with the last post as a ring tone, and I could see how it may stir up some strong emotions in people.

On the TV earlier when they were talking about this, the point was made that there had been some 10000 (IIRC) downloads, I couldn't help wondering though how many of them were effectively just donations though with not much chance of the ring tone actually ending up on a phone.

The other side is though, that the way 'kids' are with ringtones in a few weeks they will have moved on to whatever the latest and greatest is.

Like most things, some will find it offensive, others consider it honorable and many won't care either way. Personally I find the ringtones with swearing offensive, inconsiderate and juvenile.
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.
