Sorry to hear about your housing situation. If your anywhere near the main melb. freight depots for tnt, toll etc give them a call to find out who does the casuals and if they need some labour to unload the trucks. I used to work for TNT(back then it was comet/kwikasair combined depot) in sydney (enfield) as a dockhand loading / unloadinby hand + forklift and from november to just before chrissy we would put on 30+ extra casuals to cover the increase in freight. Most of the work was either early morning from 5am-10am or arvo's from 3pm - 9pm official knock off(from november with the increased freight it went to midnight or later with arvo starting at earlier). Call some of the security firms or the roadwork companies who do traffic control as many are $$$ in hand.

Had the same thing happen to us in march. The house was sold just before our 6 mth lease ran out. I was frekin out with the 60 days notice as it is real hard to find a rental in Singleton. We just kept turning up to inspections dressed nicely, kept the 3 kids under control and chatted to the agents after all the others had left. After 2 weeks we had a place. The agent we eventually rented through told us we had first choice on any of the properties they had listed. Had a look at 3 and picked the one that suited us best. Of course it had to be approved by the owner but when you get the agent on your side there is no problem.

That show with the $1 rentals was a current affair. There is a website that lists the towns apparently. I'd imagine you could get it from the ACA website.
