Okay here is what I have.
A rotating roster over 18 weeks, 3 x 6 week intervals.
Roster is to balance each 6 week period. That is 228 hours to be worked over the 6 week period {No unders or overs to carry forward} ( Equal to 6 x 38 hours).
I have 8 positions and 18 Officers to fill them (2.25 Officers per position)
Positions are:
SSU: 3 Officers x 12 hour x 7 days
SNU: 2 Officers x 12 hour x 7 days
MU : 2 Officers x 12 hour x 5 days and 1 Officer x 12hour x 2 days (2 Officers M-F, 1 Officer Sat-Sun)
Night: 1 x 12hour x 7 days.
Officers rotate SSU - SNU - MU during the 18 week cycle and work a night shift as required.
Example would be, commencing Monday Week 1 of the 6 week cycle:
2 x 12hours SSU, 3 days off, 2 x 12 hours SSU, 1x12hours Night, 3 days off, 3 x 12 hours SSU, 3 days off, 2 x 12 hours SSU, 3 days off, 3 x 12 hours SSU, 3 days off, 2 x 12 hours SSU 1 x 12 hour Night, 6 days off, 3 x 12 hour SSU 2 days off ( 6 week period finishes here, the next 6 week period would commence with 1 day off, then go 2 on, 2 off, 3 on, 3 off, 3on etc)
First 6 week period the Officer may work predominently in the SSU, in the next period it may be the MU followed by the SNU then followed by the SSU, followed By the MU etc).
There may be a need to work a double night shifts and up to 4 days straight as what I am trying to achieve is a reasonable break of between 6 - 8 days off every 6 weeks or there abouts.
Yeah I know..... clear as mud.
Okay all you experts lets see how you go
Do you have to worry about FAID? We do and it's a pain in the proverbial as we just get into a routine and they change our shift, e.g., we can't work more than 5 midnight shifts in a row.

There is a program you can download which is fantastic for doing rosters... cheap if not free... just can't remember the name of it, will have a look when i get home.
TRIAL AND ERROR!! Takes forever but I am not seeing any other way, especially working in 6 week blocks.
Do yourself up a blank template and just play with it. I work an 18 line roster but we rotate through the full 18 lines.
There are lots of programs around but nothing beats an old fashioned excel spreadsheet.
