Troopy or Defender ?

If I was to buy a Toyota, it would be a troopie. I really like them. They're tough, and simple with a pretty good motor, especially the 4.2TD. they're roomy and reliable (if looked after). I'm not yet convinced on the new ones... (The different track front/rear is a bit funny...)

However, if I was to buy a car, it would probably be a Defender. They're tough, and simple with a good choice of motors, especially a tuned 300Tdi. they're roomy and reliable(if looked after) and cheap to run. But something they have that the Toyota lacks is character.

Yes but they are only playing " catch up" and always will be .Don't you agree.After all the years since Rangie came out in 1970 with coils they have been trying to copy the wheel articulation that comes with rovers and still have not come within a bulls roar.

Is he a Toyota man or a Landy freak like most of us.

Troopie is dog ugly, I am sureeven a toyota man would agree with me there, have no character and have a very high centre of gravity.

A landy and that is pretty much all models ooze character and are good on the eye.
Better off road especially with a couple of mods and ride is better.
They are reknownfor some quirks and do suffer from reliability issues but buy one at a good price with good service and spend some coin on it to get just right and they are every bit as reliable as the next.

A car to me has to be more than just a means of transport and a Landy is just that.
A troopie on the other hand is reliable, boring and practical.

Toyos do nothing wrong but they also do not exceed in any one area where a landy does.
My advise would be drive both and let him be the judge as we would probably all get a Defender here.
I sure as hell would.

having in a previous job spent 14+ hours in a day testing in one of these things, i would not recommend them unless you have cast iron kidneys and back. The V8 deisel is a dog, its gutless (we dragged that and an old 4.2 intercooled patrol down a drag strip! edit and the 4.2 was considerably better) and thirsty... expect anything from 14-18L/100k's unloaded.. and a huge chiropratic bill

There are also lots of reports about big end bearings failing sumps / gearbox rotting out (in mines) and chassis not being up to scratch... Lets put it this way the old 75 with the straight 6 are very very valuble if you sell them to the mines....

Sorry i should of mentioned it was the 79 series Ute....

2.5 engine. No water. Long story so don't get me started :mad: I had just bought it and the previous owner did not tell me the reservoir was leaking. Driving it back to Melbourne and BANG... So some thousands of dollars later it was all fixed and has served me well for the four to five years since.

I would use my Pension Money and go for the G-wagon....

If you want good back up and better in cab economics go the troopy. You will find the sales person from Toyota more human as well:angel::(

Sounds like Toyota marketing at work, 'Toyota is great blah blah blah' but no idea why :D
