When I worked on tojo's I was on the forums as it is a good way to find out info, same here,If you want to know something just ask. There is alot of things that go wrong with all makes and models and it's not just LR's that have them, disco's for an example have lots of troubles with the ABS,100 series are the same but in the 100 it's the modulator that fails at $4000 replacement cost or $5 for a spring that pulls the peddle back up,don't anyone think that we are the only ones spending money on our vehicles. But I rest assured, I know of 1 stoppage in a 1HDT-FTE, from pump failure, and now you tell me you know 3, well thats 4 total, care me to list tdi, td5??, its a sobering moment
You must also remember that LR have to abide by euro laws that make them bring in new engines before they can develope into trouble free units, tojo don't until now and what happened, the TDV8 hasn't bathed itself in glory.Back to the thread the troopy has nothing on the defender except it's name and for bigger people a bit more room and bigger fuel tanks, nothing that can't be fixed on the defender with the $20 grand you save buying it.With the Tdi,Td5 most are wrecked by overheating them, thats what wrecks a great number of all engines types and something thats easy to avoid,my Tdi is proof that serviced properly they do last a long time. Yes they are green machines not allowed off road.It costs about 10 Grand to get them off roadable and even then do you really know what you've got..How do I know my young brother who was going to buy a Prado found out just how good they are... and with the extra cost to do what he wants them to do dropped them like a dirty rag..so much for Tojo all name no substance. I'll stick to my 300TDI it has taken me over most of Oz cheaply and comfortably. To end Tojo relies on spending millions on advertising to sell,Landrover a mere drop in the bucket.
    Cheers,

I find it surprising that no one has mentioned the nissan patrol td42, these cars are very strong and reliable this would be my option if not a landy nut.

some one in this post said that the cruiser 79 series had ifs in the front and leaf in the rear, I just want to correct this as this model cruiser has coil beam axle in the front and you were correct with the rear leafs. (small detail)

Whilst bashing toyota, the utes and troopys I agree are crap, bad suspension and over priced, but when you compare the 80 series wagon and 100 series beam axled wagons with a 2'' lift they are very capable trucks offroad. I personaly would not have one as I don't like the seating position and alot off toyota owners are dick heads, and most rover owners are open minded and friendly.

My ultimate car is my county that I am 3/4 the way through doing a isuzu
4bd1 plus turbo conversion once done I believe you have the ultimate power plant for torque economy and reliability plus charactor

Thank you all for the input !,
as expected a lot of for and against, but over all very open minded responses. ( as i expected in this forum , ) and certainly very helpfull
he is very open minded about both , slightly leaning toward the defender, but currently looking at a 2000 model troopy with only 130.000 on the clock with full service history, it also has :
    Arb winch bar
    OX 10.000 hydraulic winch.
    2 X 90ltr fuel tanks
2 bucket seats ( Drivers seat has been upgraded to after market air ride seat)
New king springs & Koni shocks
    Tinted windows
    A/C
    UHF
BFG all terrains ( prob need replaced in 6 mnths or so)
body and under caridge all look like new
price ? well it is south of $24.000

so we will se how he goes ,

again thankyou all so much for all the inpute ideas etc,

    Regareds,

    Steve

The thing that is most noticeable here is the number of troopies far exceeds the number of Defenders on the road and there has to be a reason for it. probably the most likely is there are more Toyota dealers which means more places for support if you have problems.

My Defender broke down at Bordertown and there was no way I could get it fixed there or anywhere reasonably close.

Also keep in mind that in the more remote areas you will always find heaps of troopies and probably find a workshop with parts for them. You won't find any Defender parts anywhere.

From locals I here that generally speaking on the way to the Cape it is the troopies and Defenders that seem to be reliable and it is all the others you see suffering from the journey.

So I guess I am saying that it is six of one and half a dozen of the other so far as capability is concerned which means the decision has to rest on other issues:

    1. if he loves one more than the other
    2. if the layout for some reason is more suitable in one compared to the other
    3. where he is going
    4. what impact it will have if it breaks down and has to wait quite some time for parts to be shipped in (time, cost, health)
    5. what impact it will have if it breaks down and there is no one within cooee capable of diagnosing the problem.

I often wonder what I will do if I win Lotto so far as replacing the 99MY Defender is concerned. I would like a new Defender but would have to seriously consider the Troopie for some of the practical reasons.

on this basis i would be going for a completly rebuilt 300tdi they may not be go faster but they do go on and on especially with a bit of servicing, i would also get a gearbox overhaul at the same time and carry halfshafts and water pump alternator, a vacum pump for the brakes and starter motor if i was on a run round oz, just so i could get myself out of the pooh.
but if he wants more glamour i suppose one of those ford transit land rover copies might be in order but it does have it's draw backs as in having the parts to get it out of stchook
