Blue Mountains, NSW - Recomendations Please

Guys & gals... Help / advice needed please...

We have a friend over from the UK at the moment and we are going to go to the blue mountains this weekend (Weve never been before either).

I know I need to head for Katoomba and look at the three sisters and possibly the cable car / steep train thingy - I believe thats all very close together??

What else would be worth putting on the list of "must do's" in that area?

We'll be travelling from Sydney, have 1 day and will have our dog with us.

Ive heard about Wentworth falls and the Genoalan Caves. Are these two and 3 sisters too far appart to see in one day??

Any suggestions would be most welcomed.

    Thanks
    Jon
    Regards,
    Jon

You can certainly do Wentworth Falls and the Scenic World and Three Sisters easilly enough in one day. Jenolan Caves are a about an hour or so from Katoomba (and the Three Sisters etc). You *could* be done it all in one day if you don't spend too much time at any of them.

Scenic World at Katoomba is worth doing. You can do the Railway, Skyway, Cableway and walk through the forest in an easy morning. I would also recommend doing the walk down to Wentworth Falls if you've got the time

Just check that you can take dogs with you wherever you are going. Dogs are NOT allowed in National Parks and I am not sure wether the cable car or 'steep train thingy' fall within the NP.

Of course, leaving the pups in the car is emphatically not an option.

Scenic World gets my vote too - took my Dad and Stepmother (also from UK) and we did the Scenic Railway, which went down a storm! We then moved on to Echo Point, which is the best place to see the 3 Sisters.

To do Jenolan Caves too you'll need to plan ahead as the tours only leave at certain times and actual length of tour depends on which caves you tour. It is a beautiful spot though. My only criticism is that it takes them 1.5 hours to do what should be a 20min tour.
It's better to regret the things you've done than those you haven't!

If time permits, a return via Lithgow, Richmond and Windsor is very picturesque.
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.

Govetts leap is good too (and not far from Black Heath, turn right at the traffic lights if heading away from sydney (Govetts leap rd? definitely signs, however) - the pub on the corner does a great Pie, too )

yep - or cut out Lithgow and go Mt Victoria - Bell via the darling causeway and turn right at the intersection with Bells Line of Road toward Windsor. The views of Mt Banks, and the walls of the Grose valley on the right are amayzing.

Wentworth Falls Falls is part of the National Park and so no dogs allowed. Very easy to park next to excellent outlooks, also, lots of great short walks.

Conservation Hut at Wentworth Falls is also good for a short - hour-ish - steep walk down into a waterfall.

Allow about fifteen minutes for the Three Sisters, highly over-rated imo and really geared to large tourist buses.

At Blackheath the lookout at the end of Govett's Leap Road is easy to get to and has a ten-fifteen minute walk to more exciting lookouts.

All of the above are well marked, always people there, handrails, etc.

My favourite at the moment is a drive along Mount Hay Road - just off the highway at Leura - 15km of bumpy dirt road, great views, several good short walks along the way, plus good short walk at the end. I rarely see anyone there, or if I do, one car. No handrails, much more exciting. I take my 4 year old there, so walks aren't difficult, but the excitment level is much higher.

A ride on the zig zag railway is enjoyable as well

Head up to the 3 sisters, across to clarence for a ride on the Zig Zag Railway and return via Bells Line of road with a stop at the Mt Tomah Botanic gardens.
Dinner at the (most excellent) fish and hip shop in Windsor.
    Regards,
    Tote
