Insurance write off - how is market value set?

Our boy has rear ended (at 10Km/h) a Hi-Lux in his little VW Golf. "Watching the rear end of 2 girls walking along the road" apparently can cause this when you are 18 years old.

Bent the rear bar on the Toyota. Dented the front bumper and creased a bit of paintwork on the Golf, and cracked the platic grille. No damage to the headlights or bonnet.

Crash repairer quoted $4,200 to fix. Insurance Co wants to write it off, valuing the car at $4,000. We paid just under $5K for it a year or so ago, and it was a bargain (we'd seen a lot for over $6K).

We'd like the car fixed, as we reckon it is only a grand or so of damage (rang around to get prices on 2nd hand bumper and grille etc). Where do we stand if we don't want to write it off. Seems a great shame to lose it for such minor damage, as it is still 100% drivable.

Anyway, who determines the "market value" on the vehicle? Is it the Red-Book value? Can the insurance company just set the value they want to?

    Thanks
    David

Ask a wrecker what they will give you for it, deduct that from $4,000 and ask the insurance Co for that amount in cash, you retaining the wreck.

Lots of issues with insurance companies. If they declare the vehicle a Statutory Write Off then the vehicle is only good for parts, if it's declared a "repairable writeoff" then there's a few hoops to go through before you can re-register the vehicle.

Make sure you know the status before you buy back the hulk.

The damage is cosmetic, he has been driving it around for the last 3 or 4 weeks.

It would be a write off only in the economic sense.

    Yes - twin air bags.

    How does this affect things?

Did the airbags go off? If not this should not be an issue.

You should be able to negotiate a deal and you keep the car. I have done this heaps of time.

As someone else mentioned make sure it is a repairable write off, which from what you have described I'm sure it would be.

"Watching the rear end of 2 girls walking along the road" apparently can cause this when you are 18 years old."

You don't need to be 18 for this to happen. I'm 54 and if I had dollar for every near miss for the same reason I would have my new defender by now.

    No - neither airbag triggered.

We are going to call the repairer tomorrow and see how they could possibly get the quote up to $4,200. Seems dodgy to me, but then I don't know the ins and outs of repairing cars.

As soon as you put the word "Insurance" in front of something, the price gets higher. Like putting the word "Wedding" in front of things too......

Many insurance companies will write off a vehicle if the repair is over 1/3 the value.

Panel beaters will add a fair wack to any insurance quote, as they know it will take ages to get the money after they have done the job.

Your best bet would be to take the $4k, buy the wreck back, and fix it yourself.

I could not agree more. Good advice.

Dave keep us informed of the outcome.
