Just saw the news this morning. 100 Series Landcruiser. Base spec rental special. Investigations into whether overloading was a factor. Even a base spec 100 is only a six seat vehicle at most (three in the front, three in the back). There were at least seven people inside during the crash. Even if overloading wasn't a factor, stupidity clearly was...

There are not enough seatbelts for that many people. In any crash loose objects in the cabin can cause a lot of damage to people. Anyone not wearing a seatbelt becomes a loose object...

100 series cruisers were factory available with 8 seats.

Not that I have ever seen in the base spec, but I will take your word for it.

I have just done a quick google search and I stand by my comment. Base spec (the one I saw on the news was a base spec) 100 Series are a 6 seater. 8 seats were available in GXL.

Not that I could see. Possibly because of the rear body differences. Base spec ones have "barn" doors at the back (side hinged). GXL spec has upper and lower tailgates (think Range Rover Classic). They might not have engineered seatbelt mounting points into the base rear end.

There are seats engineered in the back of the standard 100 series. It's all above board and legit, and their vehicles actually already comply with the new rules coming in.

At the end of the day the driver swerved and rolled. That's all there is to this story. He screwed up. The fact that it was a rental vehicle and he was from overseas is the part that's getting beat up.

As I said before - the last vehicle to roll was an Australian middle aged man driving a 200 series.

Weren't 8 seats an option on 100series? 7 as standard on a Prado of the same vintage, and thats a Cruiser wannabe, IMHO 80kph on the eastern beaches is too fast anyway, too many washouts and obsticles. I was told at the time that it was due to my lack of ARB sports suspension in the Turdis but I was happy topping 60kph when we were there.

looks like a typical politician response....

(time for a crackdown).... because, as the minister implies, it doesn't look like overloading was a problem in this case ..... Holey - Moley !
