TAC- 20 years of TV ads

For those of you who don't live in Victoria, Australia, we have the TAC or Transport Accident Commission, who regularly put out brilliant confronting ads targetting hoon drivers, drowsy drivers, drug taking, DUI, inattention, running red lights, etc. Their ads have dramatically reduced our road toll because they are so realistic and graphic. This is the 20th Anniversary compilation of all their ads. It's compelling. It's relevent to ALL countries, not just Australia.

    Be careful out there.

PS. It comes from their official youtube site so have a look around at their other video campaigns.

That ad was on the other day, at the same time across channel 7, 9 and 10. But the problem is, I watch quite a bit of telly these days, and I have only seen the ad that one time so far.

Pretty powerful ad, should be more like those, scare the tits off people. No more "don't speed, it's silly'" and more "speed and you will bloody-well die".

what are the opinions on that first statistic?
    1989 - 776 deaths
    2009 - 303 deaths

i'd dare say there's still just as many accidents happening, but it's improvements in vehicle safety that's making the biggest difference, especially in the lower speed crashes.

this is my fav ad - not australian though. Haven't seen any Aus ads as bad/graphics as some of the international ads

I would agree that the dropping road toll can be attributed to other factors like greatly improved car safety, improved roads, more sealed roads, better (but still not great) learner programs etc, but certainly education has helped make a big dent - this includes TAC ads which I feel really hit the mark.

You will note that I haven't mentioned reduced speed limits, and installation of cameras above. People who die in accidents where "speed" is a factor are not affected by changes in speed limit. The P plater who plows his Subaru into a pole at 90km/h in a 60 Zone quite clearly isn't phased by what is written on the signs. 90 is still 90 - wether it is 30 over or 40 over the posted limit.

Cameras. At a local stretch of road, I have driven and been driven through there thousands of times over the years. Never once did I witness a speed related (or any other) accident at this site prior to the speed camera being installed. In the years following the installation of the camera I have watched two rear end accidents happen right at the speed camera. I'd say it is a fair guess that the drivers were watching their speedos, not the traffic banking up in front of them...

Anecdotal evidence, maybe, but I will bet that it is pretty indicative. Cameras by nature reduce speed AND concentration.
