1 switch the water off at the mains
2 open the tap as tho you want water to come out , a little will but it will stop
3 center of tap handel there is a red or green ring that should pop off with a small screw driver
4 then you will see a screw undo that and the handel will come off then
5 you can slide the crome or coloured cover off
6 you will then see where you can undo the tap body with a spaner
7 undo the body and lift out you will then see the washer part
then just reverse to put it all back together

    Merry Christmas

Turn water off at mains(At meter)
    Remove handle
Unscrew body(As you said where thread tape is)around 19mm? I use a shifter.
Some water will come out so a small catch tub may be needed or a towel.
Washer assey will pull out from seat and this you can change.
If the leak is from the shaft of the tap assey you can unscrew the shaft from inside the fitting and change the "o"ring.
I always refit with the shaft undone 1 turn to get tight in housing without loading the sealing washer.
    Cheers, Kyle

You need to unscrew the top section with the handle intact to get at the washer.Sounds like the seal is stuffed. If its the hot tap a leather seal will only last days.

could be a damaged seat which the seal sits on when the tap is closed,I had the same prob on Thursday, here you can get a seat cutter to restore the finish,if not you may need a new tap

If it's leaking via the outlet it's the main washer.
If it's leaking via the shaft (under the handle) it's the O ring.

If it's the hot tap you can turn it off at hot water service but you must also shut off the heating supply.
