When I was real young (about 6 or 7) I wanted to be a Garbo.
Back in the days before wheelie bins there used to be two blokes who would run behind the truck and empty the bins. When they finished a street and were heading to another, they would ride on a step on the two rear corners holding on to a handle.
As a youngster I thought riding on the back of the truck would be fun which is why I wanted to be a garbo.
Dave.
I wanted to be a Fighter pilot but some one told me i was to small to be able to do it.
(someone said to me you had to be at least 6 foot. dont know how true that is?)
Any way after that i was always intrested with electrical stuff and so became a sparky and still am.
PS would still love to be a fighter piolet still but I have never even sat a flying lesson.
Who'd 'ave thort thirty year ago....
Well now its just over 30 years since I was under 17 but Test Cricketer was definitely top of the list. The next was to grow til I was 5' 8" so I could join the Police Force if I wanted to. I didn't so I couldn't even if I did want to.
Changed my mind many times after that and am now embarking on a new career for the 8th or 9th time.![]()

Can't remember what I wanted to be at that age, but my father was a metallurgist and I always seemed to end up working in the lab or the mill at some minesite during school holidays.
I got away from the mining industry for a few years and ended up a brake mechanic in Adelaide for a while, but eventually drifted back to mining and studied metallurgy as a mature age student (while already working as a metallurgist).
Cheers .........

14-15 I was quite content smoking drugs, drinking and generally doing other things I won't mention, then grew up and become an apprentice sparky at 16, Only other thing I've ever wanted to be was an Operator.........but that's more for the shift work and $$![]()
i seemed to be good at shooting things and making stuff go bang. ( including my alloy bike pump/ rocket. the garden shed and a cow ) so i got a job shooting things and blowing things up but i was not alowed to make the stuff that went bang so i went to uni, but got side tracted by being a bit older with a bit of money and an RX7 enjoyed that bit so much that i went back 2 more times.
I wanted to be a pilot. My eyesight was too poor to even join the services so the next choice was a teacher. I actually got 4 teacher's scholarships in different States.
But they paid very little - about £4/10/- per week I also applied for and got an apprenticeship as a fitter and turner - it paid £5 per week for a 5 year apprenticeship.
But then I saw an advert for trainee radio technicians. I applied and got one - and it paid £10 per week for a 3 year traineeship.
Guess which job I took.
I stayed in telecommunications for 37 years - then left to steer trains.
I'd love to fly helicopters.
