Come to think of it, if you want to check for broken cambelt and do not want to either pull off the cover or crank the engine is to poke something through the drain hole and wiggle a bit. A broken cambelt will most likely leave some debris (don't ask how I know). If you can't scratch off more than a bit of dust it should be okay.
As said, my first port of call would be the solenoid. Good luck, mate!

There are people who spend all weekend cleaning the car.
And there are people who drive Discovery.

No need for that on a 300tdi. The rocker arms & pushrods are made of cheese.

    Cam is turning..

Just going to get some connectors for the fuel solenoid. Ummm, As for the solenoid being at the back of the pump underneath??? My stop solenoid is at the back of the pump at the top of the fuel pump.. Very easy to get too. But I think that this is my best bet.

On the Tdi the pushrods and rockers are designed to fail if the cam belt breaks, the valves come straight down over the pistons so they cannot bend,I had a timing belt run off the pulleys on mine, the brand new tensioner failed at 110k's/hr and two pushrods and one rocker snapped, that was 6 or 7 years ago and it has never had an issue since. The fuel shut off wire is always the very first thing you check if a Tdi won't start. Gday Pat,

Had a new belt that had done about 1200km break on my 97 tdi and you can straighten the push rods if needed but it done a turbo and broke 2 of the rocker adjusting screws within 500ks of repairing the broken belt.

The turbo managed to get me the 1500ks i had left to travel and a couple of adjusters from a early falcon worked, but as you say the valves excaped any damage..

I was told its designed that way for the army but not to sure about that.

    Cheers Ean
