    What is a Hoon?

might surprise most people to know what hoon is
    ......loutish or surly youth
......one who lives off the proceeds of prostitution
    ......foolish or silly person
    ......one who is a showoff
your funk and wagnalls gives no reference to speeding in cars.....
who started this misusage of our language?
now I'm not gonna tell you what a poon is........

Doesn't the foolish or silly, plus the one who is a showoff, both describe characteristics of the commonly held understanding of a hoon?
Sure, cars weren't invented when the term may have been, but i'm sure fellows messed around on fast horses to show off their prowess, or perhaps fast boats, or tried to build aircraft all for the supposed benefit of getting the ladies attention.

Why use an American Dictionary for an Australian colloquialism?

hoon n. 1. a. an exhibitionist, an idiot who enjoys showing off. b. a show-off who drives a car recklessly or at dangerous speed. 2 a young hooligan 3 dated a bludger, esp. one who manages and lives off the earnings of a prostitute

    v. intrans. drive dangerously or at reckless speed in order to show off.

(Australian Concise Oxford Dictionary, 4th edn 2008)
