Angle Grinders and the use thereof...

    So, here is the question.

When putting a cutting disk onto an angle grinder, which way do you face the label of the disk?

    1) Label facing in (ie: facing up when looking at it from the top)

    2) Label facing out

    3) Doesn't matter...

I have asked 3 different people, and gotten the above answers.

I'd say out, but don't think it matters. What i do know about them is don't get one stuck in your arm, they cut straight through your bicep and it hurts a little and makes a big mess

They will cut you just as easily either way - right or wrong.

Nasty piece of kit as my thumb will attest. I sliced into the first joint on my thumb last July and it does not work very well any more - the thumb that is. Nearly did the same to my other thumb the other week - and that is with safety gloves on - cut through the safety gear like a knife through butter - got away with just a knick this time.

This thread just pops up as I get news my mate down the road from here has done his thumb tendons and is in Dubbo hospital

The flange will matter but label I have my doubts. The problem here as most is incorrect use. Never work in a way that they thrust from the opposite side of a job and take you out The nine inch are nasty for this.

I here ya, i did my injury cutting inch thick lead plates on a battery bank in the ANZ bank basement, i was using a 5inch with a tungsten carbide cutting disc, was weraing all the safety gear, first cut and it jammed and bit then jumped up, grabbed my shirt and went straight in my arm through my bicep (58 stitches, half internal). This happened whilst i was a third year apprentice, i told the boss it was the wrong tool for the job, but hey what did i know, 'just do the job', they did the rest with a saber saw whilst i had a plastic surgeon fix my arm

the disc should have a metal flange on one side.....
this should face whatever it is that centres the disc on that particular grinder.....

on most of the standard 4 inch little home grinders......its the nut that cetres the disc.....
so the metal and in most cases this is also the label side.....will face the nut.....

some of the discs actually have a picture and instruction as to which side should face the spindle.......

Facing in so that you can see it when you're operating the machine. I tend to think that its more just good practice as its consistent with grinders and flap discs.

I have the utmost respect for angle grinders...

I too know of people that have caused themselves serious injury with them.

I am quite happy with my little 100mm thanks.

what zook said plus the label is usually on the up side of the flange...

try to mount a flap, grind or wood disk upside down and you physically cant do it because of the guard.

    ummm

you do have the guard on right?
