Tony, what's the CTP worth? And actual rego fee? Don't stuff around with it....get it pink slipped now for $30 (if it is roadworthy) that way your coit is covered and the dough will be there for you to re-register it before it expires.

Just as an aside I should mention that there is a humbrol model enamel that is a dead ringer for the original (pre reflective ) yellow on NSW number plates.
Not that I would condone repainting RTA property for them
I think the colour is Trainer Yellow from memory but a quick wander to your nearest model shop will tell you for sure.

For Mr Rangier Rover - there aren't too many people who do not know of the Leyland Bros. It's part of Australian Popular culture - anybody wish to argue?
You need assistance ? - find someone who is also interested in said culture:
1. The local council, MP and the various other cultural organisations. (NOT THE RTA )
2. Television companies 'The Leyland Bros' screened on.
3. The Powerhouse Museum.
Write some 'I need some assistance convincing the RTA....' letters. Once you get some friends with important looking letterheads, the RTA is more likely to let the original plates stay with the car ( Historical rego or display only).
You can liken the RTA to the Maginot line: Hard to breach head on, but it can be outflanked.
join a fwd club and get it registerd on historical/club rego.
you can then keep the plates with the vehicle as it Is registered but you are limited to maintenance/club runs.
youve no idea how many plates just fall off of vehicles that are being trailered around.
I mean pop rivets ant tech screws are great n all but they just dont like haning about with a square foot of steel banging them about.

You have to hang onto the original plates .... as reproduction plates are just that ... Reproduction
Kinda like "Shaker's" and "faker shaker"
With out the original plates ... it will regress further from the identity of being the "real Mcoy"
Daves idea sounds great tho .....

I like the "Trust" idea. I'll chip in, gladly!!!!
Grew up on Leyland Bros Specials. (not 'Ask the Leylands') wish they were available on DVD.

As much as you probably don't like it, I think keeping it on normal rego is the safest as far as hanging on to the combination. I don't think I'd trust the RTA to be particularly considerate.
It might be an idea to transfer the plates to another vehicle of yours if you don't want to keep it's rego straight away.
The original plates are, in my view, worth a significant bit of any car's heritage.
The plates from my Series III were originally held, back in '95 when it was taken off the road, but then transferred to my uncle to save paying the RTA. However, last year he got a new minibus, and I was a bit disappointed/annoyed when I noticed that the plates had been remade.I wanted to put them back on when I get around to putting it on the road again. I guess I'll just have to find some of the right coloured mud and then selectively clean!

Similarly I've had a set of original plates in storage at th RTA and when I went to get them out they "accidently put them in the destruction bin instead of keeping them". They offered to remake them for free in the new reflective style but that's hardly the point.

Anytime I see an old vehicle with its original plates (usually driven by a senior member of society) I think "how good is that? If that car could talk."
