    Fires

Well, some good fires burning over here at the moment. Luckily away from populated areas. The main batch of fires (about 16) are burning SW, W of Norseman with the closest being about 35kms away. Caused by lightning storms last Tuesday morning. Has burnt out 80,000 hectares as of yesterday afternoon and FESA are bringing in more crews (noticed one from Rockingham this morning). Hyden-Norseman and Lake King-Norseman roads are closed. There is also another rather large fire burning at Southern Hills (Fraser Range) area about 120kms East of Norseman (has been burning for some months now). Just when they thought they had this one under control it flared again.
Multiple crews (dozers, graders and wildfire crews) on the ground and a chopper in the air. No water bombers yet, logistically a big call and none based in this part of the state.
Hope all goes well for the crews taking it on.
Expecting some rain tommorow and Wed, but also more lightning.
Feel a bit like a stale bottle of ale here as I can not leave the mine area and help.

Managed to get out and help a bit on Tues 9th and Wed 10th for a bit. Starting to get serious. Over 100,000 hectares burnt out now. Rain caused more dramas than help. More lightning storms on the way home last night. 32 odd FESA, DEC staff on hand at presesnt. They are thinking of bringing up the big helitanker today, just to aid in controlling it.

In our area we have had rain, but itwas shaping up to be a bad fire season. Hope they are not too bad over there. I do suggest that joining your local Bush Fire Brigade is very worth while. I am a disability pensioner who is not always mobile, but the NSW RFS [Rural Fire Service] can find jobs for everyone. There are those in wheel chair who are members, and do radio communications for the RFS. So no one can complain theycannot do it, unless they have a much worst problem.

Certainly it is volentary, but volenteers ae needed.

There's a pretty big one burning just south of the site I'm on at the moment - has been going for at least three days now and putting out a pretty impressive smoke cloud.

Up here though, we just let them burn unless they're getting close to any infrastructure.

More thunderstorms scheduled for later today - so there's likely to be more fires by tonight. Everything is so dry and the temp is 44 at the moment - it doesn't take much to start the fires off.
    Cheers .........

    John,
I do Emergncy Response for a living in the mining industry, so do all fire fighting, paramedical, vehicle rescue, rope rescue etc full time. Also as part of this we run and maintain the local SES branch and also volunteer with St John. The SES up here do a fair amount of fire fighting as there is no CFS/CFA/BFS. We are also the combat authority for Road Crash Rescue. We as SES are the Support Agency for fire and Combat Authority as St John Ambulance.
I do agree there are jobs for everyone, so all should consider joining.
    Cheers
