    Deefer add-ons

Had a look at the ARB catalogue today and was amazed at the number of accessories available. When I buy a used Deefer what accessories would I need to look for as part of the package. I am intending to do a bit of gentle off roading initially, but eventually into a bit more hardcore stuff. If I bought a base model with nothing added, what would be the minimum I would need to add initially and later for the harder stuff. Also what brands are the best. I understand a roof rack, bull bar incorporating a winch and a tow bar would be the bare minimum, but then there are things like suspension, CDL and other air lockers, 30% low range gears, long range fuel tank, tyres, various electronics, etc, etc. HELP!!!!!
    Thanks

I like a dual battery set up. Gives you peace of mind for running the Engel overnight and using a 12v versalite on camping trips.

Oh and an Engel, keep meat, beer, wine, milk cold on your trips and you're not even roughing it.

In fact forget the car for a minute I believe there are some things an Australian should own if they are really to be Australian and be able to make their way, not in order:

    1 an Akubra
2 a swag (especially true if you are young)
    3 a 12v car fridge
    4 a pair of RMs

You don't have to be a big fan of these items, and you don't have to use them that often, but you should have them ready for when they are needed.

Best bet is to work out your budget and go from there... may be looking at easygoing stuff to begin with but if looking harder down the track also worth taking that into consideration so you buy the right parts at the start which will serve both purposes... then can work out a list of bare minimums to help get you everywhere

Why is a roof rack considered to be bare minimum?.....Bull Bar...yeah probably a good idea as long as it has recovery points.....tow bar....good recovery point....Roof rack???....try and snatch off it....make sure you have the camera rolling when you do it.
    Cheers

i think you need to get familiar with the vehicle and what's available before spending a cent. Here are a couple of starters...

the first thing you need is a snatch strap and a couple of shackles.....

then you need to organise some decent recovery points front and rear....
be they bull bars and tow bars or just simply hooks.....

a couple of spotties up front......youll know why when you need to use your headlights on a defender........

a compressor and tyre pressure guage.......

then you just need to get out there with others......and you will then work out on your own
    what else you need......
you will see what others have and dont have.....and you can ask questions and get all the info you could imagine......

the key word was "need"......not to be confused with "want".....there is a difference......in the thousands of dollars......

D110V8D I'm sure 'bare minimum' doesn't refer only to recovery items. I, for one, like to take camping gear with me and just maybe not all of it will fit into the back of the vehicle. Not prepared to tow a trailer unless for v long trips.

"Bare minimum" will depend entirely on where you are and what you plan to do. In my circumstance, for example, probably the only "bare minimum" would be a bullbar and tow bar. Probably follow this by long range tank and a water tank. If you plan on a lot of night driving in rural areas, perhaps driving lights.

As far as actual modifications to the vehicle go, I would add headlight relays (not sure if 2007+ still need to add these). Very few people will need any modifications to improve offroad ability, and the need for these should be considered only after considerable experience.

But I emphasise that what you need is dependent on your individual circumstances. I don't think it is possible to lay down a list that would suit everyone, or even most.
