Check that is not just an o ring. I thought the same and it was only an o ring available from most auto parts shops.

Dave, something else that you should factor in to the equation is total cost of ownership. IE... depreciation. Defenders are renowned for having very good resale. So, while you are definitely having a bad trot with the repairs at least when you do eventually sell your car you'll get more for it than you would a jap car.

My car is an 05 like yours, and I only service it once a year with MR and do an oil change myself half way. Since going out of warranty I've only spent 50 bucks on between service parts and one pair of rear pads in service.

How many k's does the car have on it?

What CraigE said. I'm sure I've seen a blow by blow description complete with photo's on this site somewhere. Had the same problem with SWMBO's D2 engine. Cost around $400 - $500 to get the LR dealer to fix. Pity I didn't find the info here earlier, it even gives part numbers for the O rings and doesn't apear to be a major exercise to fit. Made a significant difference to performance when repaired.

I know that feeling so well.

My car is ten years older than yours and stuff needs doing, it's the way it is. Still cheaper than $65K for new one on warranty. Last thing that happened was the car was broken into and Ive paid $370 to the car window people to make a complete stuff up of the job and it's going in to the Landy people to be re-done properly. Not the car's fault it was broken into, or is getting old, but sheesh! It's depressing sometimes.

X2 just do the o-rings yourself. It will cost you no more than $4 and couple of hrs .Possibly saving a few hundred.
If it turns out to be the reg. They can be bought for about $325 and you already know how to do it!
