    Bar Fridge as ice box?

    G'day
After a recent trip away we used a mates 200l icebox which he made out of old fridge panels. It worked well and gave me and idea - what about finding an old bar fridge (you know those 80cm tall ones) ripping out the motor and using it as an ice box. I figured it had built in insulation, couldn't leak and would be light enough without the electrics. Anyway I looked at the trusty Gumtree website for a free one a low and behold there was one not too far from me so I went around to pick it up. The guy said it didn't work and I could have it for free but, turns out all that was wrong was that a possum chewed through the power cable and it kept shorting out, a short length of electiral tape took care of that but, now I don't have the heart to rip out the motor etc. of a perfectly working fridge! So i'm now on the look out for another broken fridge.
But what do you guys reckon, would a fridge work as an icebox?

Has been common practice in the goldfields (and no doubt many other areas) for years to use a dead fridge laying on its back as an ice box for after work / end of year parties etc.

We have even been known to fill one with dry ice and place a shaft in it to freeze /shrink prior to fitting a sleeve or bearing.

    Cheap and works well.
    Cheers .........

If you can get your hands on an old "tuckerbox" chest freezer they have far better insulation than a fridge, the lid works upright, and if the freezer works, you can even plug it in before you leave to cool it further.
Even new you can get them from Kmart for around $200
I think they were 90 Litre from memory

Yep - they're definitely the go. I've still got one of the smaller ones out in my shed. It gets used occasionally on longer fishing trips. Beverages and ice packed in it on the way down - run it on the gen-set overnight and if we have a decent catch, freeze the fish for the return trip.
    Cheers .........
