Price difference between second hand models

Hi all, was just looking at second hand rangies and D3's on carsales out of curiosity, just seeing what the second hand values are doing as im thinking of buying one or the other in a year or two's time.

But the D3's seem to be holding value quite well, there are a few 03-04 rangies for between 40-50 grand with just over 100000km, both diesel and petrol models. But 05 D3's seem to be the same price, so a vehicle that cost considerably less (sure its a year newer) than the rangie seems to be holding its value alot better then its more expensive bigger brother.

Wonder why this is? Is the D3 proving to be a very reliable vehicle that has shaken the land rover image of yesteryear or is it because its more popular?

Perhaps because the Rangerover is a more upmarket vehicle, and hence there is less demand for second hand vehicles - a larger proportion of Rangerover buyers will only buy new, so the secondhand price drops until it becomes attractive to people who are probably really Discovery buyers, but will consider a RR if cheap enough - they are frightened by maintenance costs. Whereas Discovery buyers are less fixated on having a brand new one.

    Dunno if that holds water!

holds enough water with me JD, sounds pretty right and makes sense. If i was to buy a D3 over a range rover second hand the servicing costs would be my main thought, but in reality would the servicing costs be that different. A question for drivesafe maybe, he owns 1 of each.

Have you thought about a Range Rover Sport instead of the Range Rover?

I thought the rule was that the more expensive the car is the faster and harder the depreciation is.

I have Garry yes, the prices of the RRS also seem to hold better then the Range Rover, there isnt a single vehicle under 50k on Carsales. Maybe in a couple years they may have some down into my price range so will consider them then.

Im open to all of the three, but will be setting a budget when the times comes of around $40000-45000. Want to save up a decent deposit between now and then so that i can minimise how much a need to get from the bank, and give me time to do a stupid amount of research

Grumbles, yeah that generally is the case, im just wondering why and JD's answer makes alot of sense.

    Anyone else got any ideas?

Have a look at the fully sick wheels on this one. They dont look to bad, but totally useless on a 4wd.

If you want a Range Rover buy a Range Rover, don't buy a D3 with a sport body. Pat
