Ranga Special and Reversing Camera

I have the red and black leads on the camera connected to a 12v battery.

The receiver is connected to a 12v lighter socket with the USB power socket plugged into the GPS and the 4 component 2.5mm plug, plugged into the AV socket on the GPS.

In this test setup the tx and the rx are close by - maybe they are too close - I will check with them a few meters apart.

Interestingly the camera Tx has an aerial but the Rx does not have one.

That's what I thought - how on earth can this work...

But it does. I assume the cig. lighter plug has a built in antenna.

The antenna will no doubt be via a core in the cable, similar to the FM transmitter.

I'm wanting to install my reversing camera on the Defender, but I'm not sure where to put it. Anyone installed one on a Defender, and if so, where did you put it and wire it into?

Is this Ranga system one of these units that uses WiFi to transmit the video signal?

My workmate's Land cruiser has one, but don't know the brand and she finds when she is driving home the video monitor on a neighbours front door gets displayed on her screen as she drives by.

I wonder if the same would happen if two units were reversing in the same carpark? :(

If so, I'd be wanting to have a bit of copper between the camera and the screen to be sure!

Garry, if WiFi the antenna may be inside the unit.

I located my Camera on my 130 cab Chassis on the rear cross member set so that I include the tow ball in the picture to help when hitching up a trailer.

Power for the camera and the reverse line are taken from the Reverse alarm (Beeper).

I'm thinking about using the cross-member also, so I can see the tow hitch. I'm also toying with the idea of using a switch to power it up, so I can turn it on whilst I'm driving along, but I think this might be overkill.

Also, I wonder how waterproof they are? I might apply some silicone to mine to keep it from getting damaged.

I'm interested to see if anyone with a 110 wagon has fitted one yet.

In my 110 I fitted the camera on one side of the reverse light. Works very well and it is well protected.

After the installation something went wrong so I returned the unit to the supplier for exchange.

Try to hold the camera with tape and see what you think about this location ;)

Best option is to wire it into your reverse signal, as the moment it powers on it overrides the GPS.

Testing it on the bench - it does not seem to work with the GPS. I have power to both the camera and the receiver - in low light the IR LEDS glow and the receiver does provide power to the GPS. When I plug the lead into the AV port of the GPS with power on to the reversing camera nothing happens.

So does in fact the camera override the GPS or does the function have to be turned on first.

Any advice?? Unfortunately I do not have any monitors that use the same small AV plug as the reversing camera to test the camera on something else.

I have given up on this.

I have tried various connectors and nothing seems to work. I am beginning to think the AV hole on the GPS is just a dummy though the product website seems to indicate it works.

I want a reversing camera for the 101 but not at the expense of having a dedicated screen. I already have the GPS, my fan, my mobile and my UHF handset already hanging off the windscreen so dont want any other screens.

It would be nice to have the camera working through the GPS though.
