    Windscreen Suction Mounts

I got woken up at 4 this morning by my alarm going off in the car. The GPS suction mount on the windscreen had let go and the interior movement sensor on the alarm picked it up and set off the alarm. This has been a recurring event and is starting to get annoying.

I have different suction caps and they all let go after a day or so. In winter or cold weather it is in the mornings as temperatures drop and the plastic suction material starts to get hard and must lift off the windscreen. In summer as the temp get hotter the small amount of air in the sucker expands and pushes the sucker off the windscreen.

When I put the suckers on I clean the windscreen and the sucker. I have tried putting fluid on the sucker so the small air pocket is fluid filled but this has not worked.

Any idea on how to get these little suckers, to suck for more than a couple of days.

I just give 'em a lick on the cup and stick 'em on. They never fall off.

Can't help with keeping them on, but I don't use them any more as I have had my car broken into while one was stuck to the windsceen and the Police said that theifs target vehicles with mounts stuck to the windsceen like that. I had the car parked at the cricket when this happened, and my nieghbour had the same thing happen when she parked her car at the cricket. Both times, the GSP's were not in the vehicle, but you end up with a broken window for your troubles. I now use a vent mount for mine, which detaches easily so I can put it in the centre console out of site when I park in the city. This works well for both the daily driver and the Rangie.

    Regards - Gav

I have used a very small smear of washing up liquid... not too much or it'll slide down the windscreen.

I have a camera that I want to mount whilst on the tracks so got a decent sized suction cup mount to take the weight and hold things steady however having some grief in that the curvature of the screen means that the larger cups don't get a good seal.

Mine do and you end up with dried spit all over the windscreen. However that was my first go at a remedy.

What about a spot of silastic on the sucker so the lot ends up being glued.

In my D2, the GPS suction mount arm sits just above the dash, then the second arm turns upwards to the bracket the GPS clips in to.

To prevent it vibrating and wobbling around, and it seems to have prevented the "falling of the windscreen" issue, I cut a 15mm long peice off the end of a wine bottle cork, and sit it under the mount on the dashboard. The whole lot's setup so there's moderate downwards pressure on the cork ... works very well!
