great information on this. Does Androzic allow for use of maps when out in the bush with no signal? It looks like a great program but how does it function when its not able to live-update from a carrier signal?

yep, IVe got all of australia loaded in under 2gb at the 1:250K level which is good enough for most vehicle based stuff providing you plan your routes on a larger screen then upload them to the GPS.

Im using the same maps as Ive been using for the last 3 years but am not having the problem of the maps are not overlaid correctly.

Yeah I use Androzic on the Galaxy S too, its pretty nice.
I've also had the problem with the map joints, not that often though.

Maps can be sourced here if your interested - http://maps.festy.org/

It does work without mobile signal, just needs GPS obviously.

also have a look at a program called Aura by Sygic it uses TomTom mapping and is very fast and accurate on my HTC Desire HD.
A very nice feature is simulated 3D topography which worked nicely up north during the cyclone

another app for android is Ulysses Gizmos which gives you the following gadgets in on smart little app.
    - Compass; Speedometer; GPS status; Bubble level; Clinometer; Magnetometer; Map view
