Thread: Higher detail maps

Hi All,

Does anyone know of a company that sells much higher detail maps of central and northern Australia for a GPS?.

Specifically looking for either 1:25k or 1:50k if I had to.. I've so far been able to find 1:250k with HEMA but the close up detail wasn't really good enough to see the finer details on if area's are actually passable with a 4wd.

Geoscience Australia (GA) digital (raster) 100K topographic mapping is available for all of Australia though for much of arid Australia the detail is identical to the 250K mapping. And this 100K mapping is getting a bit old now (can't remember the actual date). GA released an updated version of the 100K (I think it was last year) and then withdrew it. I understand the new mapping is due for re-release sometime this year though there seems to have been several hiccoughs. I suggest you contact the GA Sales Centre (see Geoscience Australia Sales Centre - Geoscience Australia) for details. There will be some mapping at 25K and 50K available for some limited areas (eg Darwin, Alice) but not necessarily as a digital topographic product (that you can purchase). There is all sorts of other digital data available across all of Australia some at quite fine scales, better than 25K (eg cadstre) but that is expensive and not going to meet your needs any way.

Always take hard copy mapping with you if venturing into a remote area.
