ACER ICONIA A501 - Honeycomb 3.2 - best map software now or in the next few months?

    Hi all,

I have an Acer Iconia 501 Tab - 10.1 inch screen. Its got the built in GPS chipset which works very well even with no correction by the 3G card (ie with card removed to test it). I have just installed Navionics for Australia and its fantastic to have that capability in the boat. I am purchasing Ram mounts for the boat and car.

When it comes to off road topo navigation I have no clue and reading through posts seems to confuse me. What is the best option for the best coverage of state forests, beach tracks, outback tracks and towns etc for the Honeycomb operating system? Ideally I would get an all in one type thing such as the software and maps that HEMA have but I am open to trying more tech savvy stuff.

Also, does anyone know good voice guided turn by turn metro type software for Honeycomb, like Metroview that I was guided to on this site, for the Iphone 4 (which mapping works very well and is very well priced)? Is there any such animal that combines metro nav with off road nav?

    Cheers and thanks

PS. I am happy to wait for a few months on the offroad software if there is a better product coming out soonish...

G'day, I don't know if there is an all in one solution but I'm using OziExplorer for Android for offroad. It's basically the same as the wince version and has the same compatibility with Oziexplorer on the pc. As for turn by turn there are a number of apps out there.

Ahhh - been waiting for this

While there is an Oziexplorer version for droid - there is also a free version called Androzic and it uses the same maps as Oziexplorer

For on-road I use Igo - which you can also get on the tablet via the market very easy - then maps ... well the interweb is your friend there as well.

A little off topic, but I have a RAM mount (for my iPad2) and found that despite the industrial appearance of the suction cap and resting the bottom of the cradle on the dash, occasionally (twice in about 6-8 months) the suction cap would detach from the windscreen. Not surprisingly this happened at really inconvenient times whilst off road. The problem was solved by removing the ball from the suction cap assembly and bolting it directly to the dash. It now stays firmly attached. There is also a noticeable improvement in stability of the iPad. If ever it comes time to sell the defender the plan is to remove the ball an plug the two mounting holes with blind grommets, which should look reasonable.

How has the Acer done out in the bush for the GPS work>???

One thing that seems to be getting harder is confirming if the droid tabs have true GPS or assisted GPS via 3G - which will not work when you are in deep bush!

The latest version of Androzic will not launch on my HTC Desire, it keeps freezing.

    GPS, and Map Software.

Having been warned by Santa Claus, that there will be an IPad2 under the 'Crissy Tree' this year, I am now looking to decent Mapping Software.
Last month, Hema released an 'APP' for the IPhone, and IPad, priced at $179, and downloadable from ITunes Store, and the 4X4 man, Pat Callinan recently introduced this on his TV programme, but there was not enough time in the 'clip', to really give us enough information to go out and spend the $179.
The App; constitutes a seamless collection of all the Hema maps of Australia, including 250,000 Kms of 'Topo', and once loaded, does not require an internet connection, ( If using with an IPad, for example ).
Has anyone on this Forum got this App, and used it? or is anyone else thinking along the same lines as I?

    Don.

Mate I have the Iconia a501. Without a 3G card in it finds and locks on sats. With a 3G card in it would be slightly more accurate i guess on land but I don't have a card for it which doesnt worry me

    Cheers
