Converting Ozi maps to Memory Map

Im pretty sure this has been covered before but I cant find any answers, only questions!

I have some ozf2 ozi maps and would like to be able to use them in Memory-Map.

Ive read about raster / vector image issues and general conversions but I still dont know if they can be successfully converted.

    Any ideas / pointers?

    Thx
    Jon

    I'd like to know too!

The main issue is that MM doesn't support the .map/.ozfx3 pairs so you need to be able to covert to an intermediate format that supports calibration data.

The file formats supported by Memory-Map are:
    - GeoTiff (embedded calibration)
    - Tiff with TFW calibration file
    - JPG with JGW calibration file

I had thought this would be possible using GDAL, however the OZI explorer module only supports a limited range of transforms and chokes on the GDA94 datum.

GDAL will happily read and convert the OZFX3 maps to the supported image formats but the .map calibration info doesn't currently convert, meaning you are faced with manually calibrating each map.

The other limitation of the open source OZI code is that it can't handle maps that span more than one Zone, which can be problematic on the East Coast of Australia.

A French guy (Jean-Claude Repetto) who writes the TomTom TTMaps application has been pushing to get changes in to GDAL that would expand the range of datums/transforms that are supported. I've been following the GDAL Dev list and it doesn't seem anything has really happened on this front for months.

It's a bit frustrating as I purchased the map convert license for MM in the hope of being able to convert the Spatial Vision VicMap Book imagery across to MemoryMap, but I'm currently stuck!

    cheers

Let me know if you're successful Jon and if so then we'll be able to do something about those maps we were looking at yesterday.

    Hi,
    watching this one with interest.
I run both Ozi and MM on a laptop and can't do much exchanging between the two.
I prefer Ozi for most of the time, but occasionally the split screen/scales on MM are handy.
    cheers

I'm currently exactly the same but the other way round. I prefer MM but often have to use Ozi.

Id like everything in MM, but it looks like I need to keep wishing as there appear to be no solution currently.

    One day...

Memory-Map has the ability to import certain types of 3rd party maps. To do this requires an additional license fee of (currently) $US 50. It may or may not accept the types of maps you are interested in.

This is mentioned under the heading "Planning" on this page www.memory-map.com/Windows_PC_Mapping_Software.html

There's a little bit of additional info in their FAQ.

The problem lies in getting Ozi format to the MM supported format with calibration intact.

It easy to convert the maps to GeoTiff, Tiff and JGP, but I can't find a way to convert the calibration. There are paid apps out there which will do the job but these are high end map making packages and cost $$$$.

The main issue for me is avoiding having to manually recalibrate individual map sheets so being able to batch convert from .ozi/.map to calibrated geotiff is a must.

    cheers
    Paul
