    Hema HN6 and PC connection

    Hello
    I am considering the purchase of a HN6. I have an Apple computer so will not be able to connect to a PC.
    What features if any will I miss out on ?.
    Do people who own the Hema navigation systems actually use the PC connection facility ?.
    Thanks in advance
    Tony

    Hi there Tonyci,
    I cannot vouch for any form of connection with the PC, and I do not even have a HEMA navagator, but I do remember on a forum some where, somebody was asking what the difference was between the HN6 and the HN5, the one interesting rply was that the HN6 was aimed more for the people with motor homes etc, where as the HN5 was aimed more for the 4WD people. The person how replied was a member of the Hema company. Just thought you should know.

    Cheers

    Thanks for the reply. I will do a little more research on that point. I had just thought that the HN6 was an updated HN5. It would appear is more of a model expansion.
    Thanks again

    The HN5 came with OziExplorer and MemoryMap installed, whereas the HN6 has only OziExplorer.

    Not sure that it makes it less suitable for 4wders however. The main benefit of Memory Map is that it makes it easy to buy topo mapping online whereas the OziExplorer mapping is typically sold on DVD or CD.

    I know nothing of all of that, or what is the technical differences between them. I do know however that I was looking to buy one or the other, and wanted to know the difference betwqeen the two. I did a lot of surfing on the web and looking into various forums etc, and the one post that took my eye was one from a memember of the Hema company who quoted that the HN6 was more aimed for the caravaner and motor home. Apart from that I know nothing so I was just taking what he said at face value and thinking that seeing he works for the company, he should know something and if he didn't or was speaking out of term he would soon be discovered seeing that he made no seceret at all he was talking on behalf of the Hema company. I will see if I can did the post out if I can find it if you wish. Let me know.
    Cheers

    It doesn't make any difference what Hema staff think their target market is.

    Hema HN6i runs two navigation programs:

    1) iGo Primo 2 for on road Navigation (with POI's for Camps 6 book)
    2) OziExplorer with a custom Hema "skin" for 4wd touring, and is supplied with Hema 4wd raster mapping:
    8GB microSD card preloaded with
    * Hema Australian Regional maps
    * Hema Topo 250 Australia map (1:250,000)
    * Hema Australia 1M seamless map (1:1,000,000)
    * Hema Australia State Maps
    * Hema New Zealand Road Atlas North & South Island maps (1:350,000)
    Hema HN5i runs three programs:

    1) iGo Primo for on road nav
    2) OziExplorer with Australian 4WD Raster Map files - There are two sets of map files supplied: the OziExplorer format and the ECW format. The OziExplorer files work with the OziExplorer program suite. The ECW files work with OziExplorer and most mapping programs.
    3) Memory Map with HEMA Raster map collection in Memory-Map format.

    Basically the HN5 and HN6 have the same Hema map coverage - with the exception of the NZ mapping. The HN5 simply had the same content in two formats. Motor home tourers might be seduced by having Camps 6 POI preinstalled but that doesn't make it any less suitable for 4wd usage.

    You could treat the HN6i Navigator as a "black box" and live with whatever mapping Hema supplies, but that really misses the point. You can load what ever OziExplorer format mapping you want to suit your needs.

    For example:

    SpatialVision VicMap DVD

    Meridian Maps 4WD touring guides

    Westprint Mapping downloads in OziExplorer Format

    Thanks Gruntfuttock and Offtrack.

    Yes Gruntfuttock you are correct in that Hema state the HN5 is more suited to 4wding and the 6 to caravan campers. I saw the same post as you. They also state the battery life is better in the 5.
    Offtrack is also correct in that the maps on the 6 are more then enough for 4wding and touring.
    The problem (if in fact it is one) is that I would not be able to update the maps or purchase additional maps as I do not own a pc. We are an Apple family.

    I don't want to hear that kinda of negative talk coming from a Mac owner!

    What I use for anything that absolutely requires a PC is https://www.virtualbox.org with a copy of Win XP. A new copy of XP Pro from ebay will cost you about $100 tops and will run pretty much anything you need.

    If you want to avoid all the fuss and stay in the Apple ecosystem you might consider looking at a 3G/4G iPad Mini. With the Hema App (which gives you all the Hema Mapping) and iGo Primo you have roughly the same functionality, plus access to the MemoryMap store for additional topo mapping.

    The Hema mapping is actually legible enough to work on an iPhone so if you have access to one, it's worth spending $7.00 to buy Memory Map and download a demo version of some of the Hema mapping. That would give you reasonable idea of what the mapping and app is like. (The Hema app is based on Memory Map.)

    cheers

    Cheers Paul.
    Correct , there area few other programmes that require a windows platform.
    Glad to see you can still source XP.Hate 7 and 8 even more.
    Cheers and thanks again
