    thinking about it, i do prefer a separate gps unit compared to a phone app.
    dont put all your eggs in 1 basket

    That is true, however with Telstra, I don't think I've found myself in a situation where I need the GPS and don't have reception, all those times I have been using my Hema app, reading signs, or following my instincts!

    I only use GPS in the city, as I have a pretty good sense of direction anyway

    I got both. Never use the dedicated GPS now. Just another thing requiring a mount in the vehicle.

    there also is the legal problem. if the keys are in the ignition and you touch a phone. on the spot fine.

    Not if it's in a cradle (at least in NSW).

    in SA, being in a cradle is irrelevant according to the officer i spoke to.
