Magellan 300, anyone used other models to compare?

Hey guys after recieving a 300 model, im am wondering , how good the other models are, and thinking of upgrading, this is for walking, and hunting, in very thick cover, so i probably should have got something with topograhical maps in the first place......any other features i missed?

Why did you buy it, how do you plan to use it?

If you've got topo maps with you, it'll be fine. If you're going to use the backtrack feature when you're lost, it'll be fine. If you're old, decrepit & need glasses like me, the newer colour displays are much easier to read.

The map displays are nice to have, but no substitute for topos. You just can't get the perspective of where you are as quickly. In conjunction with tops, they're great in my opinion - its much easier to compare the screen with the map to see where you are, compared to reading & writing down location values. But you do have to know roughly where you are, e.g. an intersection of a creek & a track to check this lazy way.

Newer ones have more sensative antennas, but the 300 series is quite adequate.

I find the moving map helpful when driving, but that's not what you asked...

As a aside my the internal battery in my old 315 died - it wouldn't retain any settings when switched off. It quickly became a pain to do a 15 minute, cold boot & setup each time it was turned on.

 Regards
 Max P

Good point, i bought it so that i would be able to report my exactish position soif i broke my ankle or sim, while hunting, and to mark locations of dead animals for return trips, some of the areas i hunt are quite large, and remote, so if you can drive a extra few ks, work out where the beastie you have just shot is, it makes it easier to get out

Yes i have done it with marker tape, and glowsticks, but am trying to live in this computer age, and get a bit more precise

Also some of the terrain is affected by dense fog, snow and sllet at times, with visabilty down to a few meters, it can amke for a interesting day out if on a new property!!!!!!!

The other reason was to be able to compile a bunch of data on topo maps on a computer , like rub trees, wallows and the like...this makes for fasinating study when youre getting into the nuts and bolts of a deers mind.

so far i dont think i can do this with the 30, after being told by the guy i purchased it from that i could....not happy Jan

So im thinking of upgrading to the 400 explorist, what do you think?
