i have co pilot and tomtom and the whereis based software and have found them to be utter crap in comparison.

A gps is a navigation aid, not a navigator in and of itself...

you should see what happens to em when the gps resolution is off, they have all kinds of panic attacks...

I primarily use copilot (thats what it came with) for its speed indication and route planning, the fact that it gives me occasionally accurate directions (bout 95% of the time) is a bonus... I also like that i can put it up so it only reads my position and it has a nice position averager so that when you are stationary you only get position flicker from the HDOP for 2-3 seconds before it decides its stationary and begins to average out the GPS positions.. then it takes 2-3 seconds to decide that your moving again, but I can live with that.

Ive just got my head around copilot CE and the maps dad bought me for xmas... Its pretty good but doesnt do auto routing.

Never had GPS when I did my Nav courses. And yes, we in the Navy also need to navigate ashore as well. See the hill in the distance, it is on the map. See the creek bed, it is on the map. See the complex math needed, oh bugger. Now I get it. I suppose some do need help in these matters after all. I suppose, being a Luddite, I actually enjoy being able to get by without the Mod-cons. A challenge, to be accepted and over come.

That's right. GPS is an aid to navigation not the be all and end all. I prefer to use moving maps/auto routing for getting about to make life easy but can certainly find my position if they were to fail. Some of my friends would fall in a heap if their GPS played up.

If we didn't spend money to make life easier then why did we buy Land Rovers? Maybe we should just walk to our campsites?

Buy a Land Rover, and drive to the campsite no-one else can get to. With-out GPS, who can find us then?

Sure I did. With my Rodeo I had to do too much walking. It never had anything go wrong with it but it didn't get me far enough either.
I spent more time taking photos of people doing cool stuff in their cars while my Rodeo was parked up on the chicken track than actual 4wding.

I would agree with Inc. Destinator on a PDA works very well.
Used it recently in an area of Sydney that I was not familiar with. Took me exactly where I wanted to go. Did slow down a bit when going through the Tunnel under the Harbour, but it re-started perfectly when we came out the other end.
Also use Oziexplorer. Both programs can get you anywhere and back.
