    oziexplorer ce on pda

I have just picked up a hp rx5700, it has tom tom 6 loaded, and I would like to move the 250k topo maps and the hema maps from my laptop to the pda. Does any of my knowledgable collegues know the best way to do it. I apparently have to buy ozi ce and that is all I know. After many years of the hard way, I now ask first. Cheers guys

I have oziexplorer ce running on a Toshiba pda. You can use the trial version to play with and see if you are happy with it. It works ok but shuts down after an hour (or maybe 15 minutes, cant remember) You will need to copy the maps onto a compact flash card or SD card.
Personaly I prefer paper maps but sometimes it is good to be able to see exactly where you are on the map by checking the pda.

Ozi CE is the way to go....

but you will need the pc version of ozi to setup the maps on, Fortunately you dont need the registed versoin, just Ozi to make up the .map files and the file converter if your maps arent in a native ozi standard (like .ecw)

Don't know what processor the HP has but to use .ecw files the pda needs an ARM processor.

The Auslig topos are ecw files I think, so how do you compress them to run on the pda, or will they run in standard form.

go to the gpsautralia.net forum and check out the maps section, i got the whole of vic/nsw on dvd that i compressed and fit onto a 2 gig sd card for my pda, they were indexed and ready to rock. I used IMG2ozf that i got from the Ozi webiste to convert and compress the maps for pda use and just right clicked and sent to my sd card in a card reader.

I experimented with Ozi-CE on a PDA. I found it easy to use, but found the following limitations :

    1. The PDA would reset if not used for a couple of weeks and then Ozi would have to be reloaded.

    2. I was able to see where exactly I was on a track, but if I wanted to know where that track went to, or intersected with others, by the time I zoomed out enough to view the wider field, everything was so tiny I couldn't make out tracks. It should really be used in conjunction with a paper map.

    3. CE versions of maps take up a lot more memory than PC versions.

Because of these limitations, I've gone to a small laptop/tablet, which has performed really well in the bush.

We have this problem all the time. The PDA's are designed to be in use all the time, but we only use ours for trips away. Seems a waste of electrickery to have it plugged in all the time but thats the only way to avoid the problem

You can get another program that you can backup everything to another SD card, so when you pull the PDA out of the cupboard charge it up, put the SD card in restore everything, and then put in your maps card and away you go.
