Etrex to laptop and Discover oz

    Hi folks,

Ive got an Etrex, the peripheral cable and the USB/peripheral cable to be able to connect the Etrex but I think I need some software to run it as well as the drivers from Garmin and was wondering seems the Garmin drivers are a free down load but with dial up is too slow, does anyone have it on disc that I could get a copy of.

And also, what software do I need to connect the cables and the etrex to the laptop.

Forgive me for being a bit backward with this stuff, im more in tune with nuts and bolts.

By the way, I have had this set up working on my Mums Laptop with the same cables and GPS but she no longer has the software on her computer.

Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks
    Damo

You don't need any drivers for the Etrex but you will need a driver to use the USB/serial cable adapter.

As for the mapping software to make it useful you could use the Garmin software which is Mapsource I think. Oziexplorer is what I use and is very popular. Both you could get as a free download for a limited use version.

So is discover Oz anygood as that is what was running on Mums so when she upgraded, I got her copy.

I cant download for some reason on this connection, as soon as I get it down loading I leave it for a while and it drops out.

I know this is also something I am doing wrong probably but I know enough to get me through record keeping and google searches at work and how to get around this site with minimal difficulty so feel free to please explain how I can down load them.

In terms for dummies would be good

    Thanks

I think Discover Oz is Magellan software which is another GPS brand. I don't know if it would work with a Garmin or not but it sounds like you have already used them together so I guess it does.

    For Oziexplorer download this file

    http://www.oziexplorer3.com/eng/down...iexp_setup.exe

Instructions can be found on this site
    http://www.oziexplorer.com/

I couldn't find a link for the Mapsource software on their website so maybe you can't download a trial version of that one.

Yeah thanks UM for the links, I have used them together on another PC before but straight through a serial port, not with the USB/Serial cable.

I didnt do much with it as I was still trying to understand it all at the time but it did connect and it did take info from my GPS as in my waypoints and our current possition at the time.

Ive down loaded OZexplorer to give it a go but now I just need to down load some maps and give it a go.

Did you find the driver for your serial to USB cable?

As for downloading maps for Oziexplorer I have gotten plenty via torrents but if you're having internet issues then that won't help you. Did you mention recently that you're still on dial-up? If so then forget torrents.

If you still need a driver for your serial to USB cable then PM me your email address and I'll send you the driver for mine. It might work. Especially if you bought your cable through Jaycar or Electus.
If you want some maps then include your postal address in the PM as I have one or two

Thanks mate, I have given up looking at the moment, Ive turned the house upside down and I dont know where it's gone.

Ive been busy at work again and havnt got back to it so hopefully this week I might get time.

And yes, at home I am on dial up and at work, I cant use it for personal use any more, so when I get organised again I will give you a bell.

    Thanks again for your help.
