Tom Tom - not working in freelander

    Hi All

Been in Australia about 7 weeks, my TomTom has been great, until I fired it up in the Freelander.

It works If I hold it out of the window, but as soon as I put it in to the window mount it looses the satelites, and only picks them up intermittantly. Is there something in the glass that is stopping it?

Do I need an external antenna?

I have a cheap Tevion that works fine in my Freelander 1 - what freelander do you have - I would not have thought it was the car causing the issue as mine works even when it is stored under the drivers seat with me in it.

My only though is that it might have after market tinting that might shield the signal - however the windscreen will not be tinted and the signal will go through the steel roof.

My tom tom won't work in freelanders or peugoets. No idea what it is. I used an external area. Which was freakin annoying but.... no choice. You can pick 'em up from jb hi-fi cheapest i found. THey were charging $29 from memory when I got one.

It's the metallic material they put in the windshield - blocks the GPS signal. They normally leave a non metallicised area up near the rear view mirror but that's not a great place to put the GPS. Our Peugeot 307 had the same problem with e tags and our Tom Tom.

AH, that explains it, I have just received the etag in the post, havent fitted it yet, but read the thing about the metallic windscreen.....

Out of interest, have you got the heated FRONT windscreen (for de-misting)?

There is a notice somewhere in the TomTom packaging stating that the signal will be seriously affected by the heater element in the glass in cars fitted with front window heater elements.
Had the same issue in the UK with mine on a few other cars.

    Cheers,

I use a Garmin Quest in my Freebie, my wife's renault (with metalised screen), my Smart Roadster (with metalised screen) my TRX850 and my pushbike.
All generally no problem, I have run an external antenna on the Freebie and it offered only a very minor improvement.
So perhaps the Tom Tom doesn't have the same sensitivity to low signal strength?

No, no heated front screen, I picked up an external antenna yesterday, tucked it up behind the rear view mirror. the signal is much better now.

    Thanks forthe replies.
