    opening up cheap GPS units.

Those cheap units that are now in the sub $200 bracket (some are sub $150)
are all now open slather providing they have a USB port and an SD card reader

Ive just cracked open one of the aldi Voxtrack units using version 3.0 of mio pocket. (which is a front end for the crippled version of windows CE that most of these gps's run

Its a 100mbish Download but worth it. comes with a huge stack of stuff from games and office programs to registry editors and file managers.

the process Involved was not as outlined by the GPS forums (nor the included instructions but required me to do half of the SD card free installation by renaming and copying some files to the flash drive, then doing the SD card install then undoing the renaming of the files I did in the first place to get the install to start.

Just copying back the maps I had to delete from the SD card to make it all work and in theory Ive now got a fully fledged PDA/GPS

took a bit of thinking and looking at file structures but for anyone who can follow file structures and directory layouts it shouldnt take too much rocket surgery to work out.

heres the Rapidshare link to the install file andhere is the link to GPspassion forums that googling lead me to.

    detailed instructions later.

is this a full new installation of mio pocket or did you retain the gps software as is?

    both.

that was the hard bit getting miopocket in in the first place and then getting the original software to work as well.

Dad wanted moving map topo mapping but didnt want to pay for a top of the line gps system. Mum has seen me using my mioA701 phone/gps/pda and liked the turn by turn navigation and wants one for when she gets home.

I remembered Connie has had an aldi (voxtrax gps300 essentially a mio300 gps in disquise) so I did the geek thing and set it up so it was a PDA instead of just a personal navigator.

Dad goes and buys a mio moov 300 GPs unit and I've just got OziCE runnin on it.

    the super simple version.

for less than $300 you can purchase a turn by turn navigation unit do some computer hickory to it and instead of just doing street navigation you can use it for anything you can use a PDA for including using topographical maps (the maps with all the wierd lines over it.

as a rough indicator. instead of seeing something like this on the screen

you would see something like this with a little marker telling you where the GPS is on the map

I'll hack em on an as needed basis.

The softwares all free and anyone who is computer savvy enough to read should be able to do it.
