    WA Maps

Anyone know where I can get some WA maps for Ozzie Explorer. I've only got the Index maps at the moment

Good question. Answer might not be so easy though.

Maps for the eastern states are readily available in several formats and scales but WA?

One way would be to get the NATMAP 1:250 000 which covers all of Australia.
But of course a better scale would be 1:100 000
    or 1:50 000

1:25 000 is available for Victoria and much of Tasmania for example.

I guess it really depends on what areas of WA you want and what scale do you want?

Have you tried a map shop? They may at least be able to provide a list of what is available. Or there must be a government mapping agency you could contact.

Geoscience Australia are responsible for mapping to scales as large as 1:250,000. They have covered all of the states at that scale.

Larger scale maps 1:100,000 1:50,000 and 1:25,000 are the particular state's responsibility.

In NSW and QLD, 1:25,000 scale maps have only been released for the east coast side side of NSW and south - east part of QLD.

As VIC and TAS are small, those states may be covered by 1:25,000 (but I don't know).

I don't know the situation for WA or NT, but would not be hopeful for large scale maps except possibly near the most populated areas.

    Download a copy of GoogleMV.
With that you can pull down google maps or satellite image maps of any where you are interested in and at what ever scale you want.
Be aware there are file size limitations e.g. you can't down load the entire Canning stock route at 1:25000, you will have to break it down to tiles of about 1 degree square.
It calibrates the maps to Ozi as well.
    cheers

    Hi

i managed to find a post about googleMV from about 6 months ago, this is the guts of it:

hey guys, found a link to download software called MVGoogle. It allows you to select any given area of google eart sattelite images or google maps images, and instantly convert them to an Oziexplorer map file.

    http://www.silber2004.narod.ru/GoogleMV1.zip

The page is in russian but just click on the link ending in GoogleMV1.zip and it will down load.

    Extract and start.
Again it will be in russian, go to gear symbol and you can change the language to english.

    1. What zoom? Don't be too greedy as detailed images need a lot of space and download time. 13x gives you quality similar to NASA satellite images. 14x is the best I can get in some parts of WA. 15x is my favourite: reasonable details, but not so big. 16x is very detailed and I wouldn't go any further.

    2. How to do it? My preference is to zoom at size I like and than scroll through the area of interest. Once you got everything, zoom to a smaller number, select the area you looked earlier and zoom you used before. Click Start and in Operating Mode set Internet and Cache. Accept it and image will be created within seconds. Selecting Cache & Internet will take longer but if you don't, some of the map may not already be in the cache. Obviously the larger the area you select to use as a map, the longer it will take to build it from the net. So, go small. If you select to create .map file, you can use it in Oziexplorer immediately. Cache stays on your computer and you can use it later to build on it.

I have used google MV and its pretty good, just go slow and don't try to bite off too big a chunk of map at a time.

    regards
    Nick
