If you know a bit about GPSs or are prepared to learn, then this is a good option.

I started with no experience at all of GPSs and with the help available here and other places I got it set up the way I want and I am pleased with what it can do.
It is well within your budget.
At my age, I really don't think I could have managed with a screen smaller than the one it has. I have yet to see one with a 5" screen for anywhere near the price.

i have the mio c220 and i could not recommend it
it runs on daylight saving times and you cant change that, like i live in the west
e-mailed mio they dont answer e-mails but you do get a lot of e-mails telling you about dearer models
to do a map up grade, the cd they send you will stuff up your mio so you have to send it to them at your expense

By dual use do you mean for in vehicle and whilst walking. If so I would not recommend the Ranga AULRO GPS. It does not have the battery capacity. You might get 1-2 hrs from a charge.
If so I think you would be better off buying a Garmin handheld unit which would have a battery life of +8 hrs and get a car bracket & cig socket lead for it for when in vehicle.

Maybe a poor choice of words - by dual use I mean turn by turn instructions onroad eg Tom Tom and offroad eg oziexplorer. At the moment my Aldi GPS is great for around town (and actually most offroad tracks I have been on) but my laptop and remote 7" screen is a bit cumbersome to set up each time when I go offroad with oziexplorer, so I would like something relatively cheap that can replace both - hence the term dual use. The onroad aspect would have to be updatable.

If you can follow instructions and copy to a SD card you will be fine. I don't know how many 'Ranga' gps units got purchased but there haven't been too many issues. I can't speak for Ranga, but he seems like a pretty accommodating bloke otherwise he wouldn't have made the initial offer to help and am sure he would help you out.(thats putting you in it Ranga)

Always happy to help AULRO subscribersMy way of giving back for all the help I receive here.
Worst case scenario is you buying a unit and shipping it to me with a prepaid post bag, I modify it and send it back - no charge.
A few people have done this already. I'm a bit slow sending out DVDs (sorry for those still waiting), but usually I modify a unit the same day I get it and send it back the next day.
I've probably seen about 30-40 of these units so far, and am yet to see one get sent back as faulty. There have been a couple of hiccups along the way, but all have been sorted out (except for Weeds which I'm yet to have a crack at).
Let me know if you want a hand - at about $130 including shipping, I saw it as worth the gamble instead of paying ~$1000 for a Hema unit that does virtually the same thing.
