I've got a little 192 in the shed that pulls to 8000 rpm. Although engine builder ( ex HDT) says it only needs to goto 6000. Most engine builders only like to rev 202's to about 5800

All the old rally 202's from the seventies/eighties would easily run 7200RPM all day (and season) long.
The extra torque from the 202 is a big advantage when racing/rallying.
The current race 202's as used in historic racing are insane, running roller cams, etc.
Starfire rods, blue crank and decent pistons help a lot without going OTT. :D
When my uncle built his 186/192 for his Series III (wish I'd bought it off him :() he just balanced everything and carefully assembled it, probably no-where to the degree I would have done and with the overdrive it was silly fast, but then it was a quick car with the old 2.25 engine too with a set of Perry headers and a decent exhaust.
When I was a kid Dad had a near new and very well running HX or HZ Holden van sans all the ADR27a stuff :angel: sitting at 140km/h indicated and the Series III with the 2.25l engine pulled away from us on the freeway near Goulburn one night :o

the truck in my avatar was a 202 yella terra head, cam, carbs etc i had a small test with a member of the boys in blue and at a servo we disscussed how fast the old rig could go,(usual comments like 95 down hill with a tail wind) as he had owned a cpl, well he suggested a test on our way home so he sat behind me and speed checked me on the highway, the result was very cool, A DEFINATE 100 MILE PER HOUR + a cpl
it was awesome only problem was keeping gearboxes to it, it loved eating them .......
You should be able to get about 70-75mph out of a stock red motor in a shorty, knock about 5mph off for a 109. Put a high speed transfer case in and you will see around 90mph in a 109!

Not quite, if your running the std rag cam gear. I came unstuck after overtaking up a hill doing about 115-120km/h... :o I completed the passing maneuver only to be left with no power and a long tow to where we were heading. Changing a broken cam gear in the bush is not much fun.Quote:
