Here are some photos. The dip stick still has oil on it. I will try to rotate the crankshaft today, I tried turning the fan but the fan belt is too loose.
how many welsh plugs does it have?

The engine number is on the drivers side, there is a milled area front in front of the distributor, also there should be large numbers on the passenger side just below the manifold near the alternator and above the sump, this will also tell you what size the motor is e.g. 149, 161, 179, 173, 186, 202 these are all known as red motors. just to note the engine number will tell you what model Holden the motor came from originally as some people restoring a car to concourse condition may be worth more to them. Try here for info on you motor

I didn't think Holden engines have welsh plugs? Welsh plugs are a particular type of core plug, which look like a domed round disk. When fitted they come up against a shoulder in the block, then you hit them with a hammer to expand the diameter and seal the block.
They were used in WWII International truck engines and various other makes but rarely used after the 1950's.
Holden engines use the standard cup shaped core plugs.
You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
I just saw it from holdenpedia maybe they said core plugs but I though he said welsh
AFAIK the outer fram is steel the rest is alluminium. I got quoted $250 for a new one out of steel or $350 for a new one as original.
personally if I was going to get a steel one I would probably have a go myself
It's one of those common misconceptions. Many people think they ARE called welsh plugs until they try to buy some.
In fact it is actually pretty hard to find welsh plugs these days. We had to replace some in a WWII M3 half track last year and it took about a month to find someone who had them in the correct size.

I've always thought of them as being called welsh plugs, but yeah core plugs works , any way just took a couple of snaps of the 149 motor that's going in my landie you can see 3 core plugs left hand side of block and 1 at the rear of block.
