As an "ex-Yank" (of 25 yrs ago) there are a couple of reasons:
- US prices exclude any sales tax, GST, etc. That's because these taxes are specific to the suburb (even specific mosquito abatement precinct
) that people live in. The Aust GST is included.
- There's no so-called "luxury car tax" which we have, and
- I suspect that US prices were locked in a yr or so ago, when the Aust $ was worth about US$0.75. LRUS would have "locked in" the exchange rates (as do LRA).
The more normal stuff that more left hand drives are made so bigger base of cars to amortise specific costs, cost of labour (US dealers are known to hire illegals at below-min wage to do a lot of the work), and yes, it is a larger competitive market which drives profits down.
