Hi all,
Dropped the D4 at the window tinter's this morning and 4 hours later when I picked her up the battery had flattened enough that the car would not start. She just mad a horrible ticking noise as the starter solenoid cycled till the car computer decided she won't start. Jump started her with a regular battery.
The tint guys said they only switched on the ignition without starting to open the windows etc . The key was sitting on the windscreen wiper so was the car looking for that all the time? Anyone else had a flat battery yet?
I dropped by the dealer after this happened and he said they can flatten pretty quickly if the ignition is left on without starting the car. He wondered i the ac fan had run and the tint guys didn't realize. Bit scary really that the battery can run flat enough to not start in such a small amount of time. The tint guys reckon the do the same with all cars and have no problems. Perhaps a land rover battery management firmware upgrade is in order
thanks in advance
well that the strange part, they reckon they only turned it, well pushed the start button for short busts to open/close the windows, so don't quite know what to believe
Well i think i have worked it out. When driving home tonight the clock said 5.50pm, hey i'm home early i thought, but it was actually 6.30pm. That means that sometime this morning the car was flat for 40 minutes. So I think what happened was the ignition button was pressed, the ac fan would of run, the auto headlights would of come on and the radio turned on. This would of flattened the battery in no time?
That would explain why the guys weren't overly surprised when I tried to start the car.
I think i can stop worrying now. I would of been up all night thinking about it otherwise.
That's interesting . If I disconnect the D3's battery for the afternoon
to do something requiring the CANbus off , the radio still has its correct
time , stations , etc when I connect ...........
I'd have thought they'd have switched the headlights off !
Hi Brad72, Just had my 12,000Klm service. My dealer told me that there is to be a recall shortly. What they will be doing is upgrading the battery to a larger one and doing a software upgrade. I am told that this will be on all D4's.

DISCUSSED THE RANGE OF THE KEYLESS ENTRY SYSTEM WITH MY DEALER AND HE WARNED ABOUT THE KEY BEING TOO CLOSE TO THE ENGINE AND THAT CAN CAUSE THE LOW BATTERY CONDITION IF IT GOES ON FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD. COULDN'T TELL ME how long before it can become a problem but it's something we should all be aware of, especially at home.
I checked mine and it happily locks the car from inside my kitchen!!!!!!!
Hi, I am only guessing here, but it may be a different technology at work, so no need to worry too much?
The lock/unlock is likely to be running off a transmitted radio frequency powered by the battery in your remote, designed for longer distances. The car searching for the key is probably a Radio Frequency ID (RFID) with a localised field - sort of like the anti-theft sensors at your local retail shop looking for theft tags, or like the electronic entry to an office building.
The problem there was that the key was too close to the car.
With the keyless technology, having the key that close is effectively like having the key in the II position on the ignition all the time. All the systems are primed, ready for you to hit the 'Start' button.

I leave my keys in the car all the time, overnight and during the day. They very rarely leave the car. I have found that the car "Goes to Sleep" after a few minutes and doesnt appear to drain power. I do have the remote that doesnt open the doors without pressing the button first
