    The towbar as a defence strategy

    Was at the front of a three car accident on teh Eastern Distributor the other day, I had to brake hard to avoid hitting the car in front of me that suddenly slowed, the car behind me also stopped in time, just, but the car behind him hit him hard when shnted hum hard into me.

    I twas a fair hit, but the towbar took most of the impact and I cant see any lasting damage anywhere once i popped the black plastic tread trim on top of the bumber back into place.

    I will get it checked out to make sure, but looks like the towbar saved me.

    Tow bars are excellent protection ,especially with tailgaters.
    I often see vehicles with the whole HR weight distrib. stuff
    , just for that reason. The absence of any useage is the clue

    That's all good but it's actually illegal to drive with a removeable towbar tongue attached to the vehicle so if someone wanted to get narky you could get a ticket. I'm not kidding!

    no your safe, if you drive a SW, no secure and safe place to keep the tongue, difrent if its a sedan

    I really think that is incorrect !!

    IF and only IF the number plate is not in clear view would it apply.

    And with the position of the number on the rear upper door on a D3 & D4 & even RRS, that would be particularly hard to do with a towbar and tongue setup along.... maybe with a bike rack, but thats not being talked about here.

    I have one of the Land rover plastic A-Fame bars and after having examined it once it was installed I came to the conclusion that against a kangaroo it will be nearly useless, but in the event of an accident with a pedestian it will actually be doing them a favour being much softer and more compliant than the standard brick wall that is the front of a Disco.
