Thread: 20in wheels for Disco 3

Hi Sheckster,
On the D4 the tyre size is 255/50/20, one of the problems will be witdh, I had a friend who was running these & said they extremely close to the inner shocks/can.
The tyres size will be a little under as they are for the Sport & in the entire range they run 5% difference in size..
EG: the 18" rims 255/55/18 for Sport. 255/60/18 for D3/4,
same with the 19" rims 255/50/19 Sport, 255/55/19 for D3/4.
So just take note the speedo will be out a little.

The other problem you will have is you will feel EVERY bump, ant, fly, rock on the road. You will also get a lot of jolts throught the steering as the steering rack is not set up for the 20"s.
I would run 36/38 psi & then trial run yourself until comfortable.
PDI settings are 33/36 for all tyre sizes.

Good on you mate. Nobody has mentioned 19" rims lately for the fear of a massive attack from others, and you come right out with a query on 20" rims. If you like them and they look good, do it.

I know, I was actually waiting for some feedback. I'm well aware they're not everyone's cup of tea but I thought I'd try it out. Even LR here in Brisbane told me only up to 19 for the Disco 3

Thanks Sniegy, as per usual, you always got the info and facts. I will update on how it goes when I get it. I'm already bracing myself for the bumps, exact reason for keeping the 18's. With the speedo though, if it's saying 100k/hr, is it really 95 or 105?

If your speedo is reading 100 you will actually be doing approx 95K/Hr.
Its not a true 5% as the percentage is tyre percentage not mathematical percentage.
If u have a GPS or could borrow someones for a quick spurt up the highway, this wil give you a better reading of differences for reference.

To be precise...in my mod warning about this topic I referred only to changing the topics of threads to rims. I did say if you want to create a new thread as has been done here so no issue. People who feel they're read enough on the subject can now easily avoid it.

Now if this post had been made in a non-rim related thread that would have been a concern.

The correct pressure depends on the vehicle weight. Mine is heavily accessoried so I run 40psi and tyre wear had been excellent. For a lighter car I'd run lower pressures. I would start at say 38 and work it out from there, use some of the standard techniques such as increase of 4psi from cold to warm, chalk line across the width to check for even wear, how it feels.

Why does the rim diameter make this difference to the steering setup?
