    D3 Auto Transmission problem

Hi All !My 09 TDV6 D3,22000km is going in again for attention on auto transmission.Problem is that gears drop in especially when box changes down and looking for lower gear. The transmission was as smooooth as silk.My service agent replaced faulty transmission valve body on last service 4 weeks ago problem not much improved if anything engine seems louder than before.Truth is I would like this fixed as I dont want problems down the trak. Any ideas? Rostbif Unhappy!!!!

    Hi Rostbiff,
Your "service agent" is this a Land Rover service agent or an agent who services Land Rovers amongst several other brands? 22k isn't a lot of klms at all, what triggered the change, did this problem happen or was it after a specific event, a puncture, off roading, a service, anything. Something usually triggers the initial event. My I hooked my camper trailer up started up a hill and felt a slight judder, now i'm into major preventative actions, replacing sump pans and changing expensive oils, an event triggered me doing this, what's your story?

    Hi Nomad9.
Trivett Parramatta is the agent. No specific incident we can relate to.Only done one big drive to date,North Queensland and back and only one trip back through the Watagens after lunch at Wollombi on the dirt.No puncture.Just noticed one day that gear change was lumpy droping in, no noise, just really thought it was something that would be sorted at second service, was a bit suprised when they kept it over to replace faulty transmission valve body. The seeds of doubt are now kreeping in as the problem is still with us untill at least when it goes in on the 28th.It is a warranty issue and I am sure Trivett will stick with it but I would prefer a fix not a repair no doubt all will unfold. All I know is its not like it was and not right, just wondered if any of the lads had had similar.I will report my findings. Many thanks for your interest.

    D3 auto transmission

Back again!Well just had the 36000km service and raised the aformentioned gear box problem again with service agent wich is----Lets say we are slowing down on approach to junction or roundabout, foot off revs gear box starts to select lower gears gears all is fine!We get to a point where gear selected by auto is say second and we are at that point where we dont actually stop but accelerate away as the the traffic would allow us to do so. At that point of acceleration its as though the electronics havn't quite decided what gear it wants and then makes a hurried decision to find the gear it now requires and does so in a very sharp way, no noise but a rather uncomfortable jolt. The rest of gear changes up and down are smoooooth as one would expect its just that moment of indecision.Besides spoiling my driving pleasure it is a bit of a worry considering down the trak.Service agent say and i quote"cheked for faults and software updates, non available found transmission to be working as designed,no repairs. All I know is,is that it wasnt like this new.Any ideas before I go and see service manager.

    Not just gearbox problems

I won't hijack this thread, but would like to add that some of the electronic issues won't show up on software and fault check. The reason for this being that it may be related to an electrical issue which is not via the computer. Computer will only indicate smething is wrong if it knows there is something wrong.

As an example, I have issue were the throttle goes down leaving no response momentarily. This usually happens at an inopportune time like pulling out into traffic or a busy intersection - quite scary when you suddenly loose all accelerator pedal for a couple of seconds. Also seems to do this mainly when given some throttle then back off and require another bootful then - nothing - Oh there it is after short delay.

It is an inconsistent problem, and it does not show on the computer checks. I believe it is in the linkage between accelerator and computer.

Perhaps your gearbox has a similar issue.

Hi John and thankyou.Your coments and experience are certainly in the zone and yes there is that moment of nothing before the jolt or dig as the whatever it is, dose it thing.I can best describe it as if it were like when the old autos were put into drive and the bands needed adjustment. There was that pause before the gear was engaged then there was that jolt or dig as the gear came on.Sends me mad. it can be quite sharp sometimes. Thanks again Andrew.

My wifes Jaguar v8 used to do this, similar box, I believe there is a software fix. I do agree its one hell of a kick when it happens. It used to almost snap your neck in the Jag.

I don't think your problem is the gearbox (although you can ask them to reset the predictive adaptation and see if that helps).

It is more likely a power/throttle/EGR issue and as you progressively push down on the accelerator to get something happening, you force a kickdown in the box and it finally takes off.

Had this problem in my '06 D3 - solution turned out to be a combination of a fix to the EGR valves and a software update for the turbo.

    Cheers,

Many thanks for your input guys.I was begining to think my problem was a one off.I do think the problem began when LR replaced the faulty transmission valve body as mentioned in my fist post. When they replaced it I was not aware of anything out of the ordinary at that point. In fact I am not even sure what the transmission valve body is (excuse my ignorance they dont have these in the plumbing game ).I have been wondering wether or not to take it up with service agent again or even go directly to LR Australia.Any views ?Thanks again and have a good one.Rostbiff

My D3 V6 has always done this, although to a lesser extent than what you describe. I've learnt how to drive it though those times of accelerating from a slow coast. I know of a couple of other D3's that do the same.
