    4 new tyres or 5?

    Hi All,

Was just wondering what people's thoughts were on also replacing an unused spare when the OEMs give up the ghost?

Obviously there's the $400ish difference between getting 4 or 5 tyres, but I'd be interested in anyone's thoughts or experience on the possibility of being stuck off the beaten track after a puncture with 3x AT/ATRs + 1x OEM 18" on the D3 - is the traction control likely to go troppo?

    Cheers,
    Rick

I'd be rotating the spare through the other 4 now, and replacing 5 when they wear out. If your trip is that serious or remote, why even consider getting stuck with an unsuitable replacement. Further to that, if your trip is that remote, you should have 2 spares not 1. IMO.

I also suggest match the tyres.
If the ones on there are now stuffed, take spare and sell it as a new, some one will love it at the right price.
Than buy 5 new matching ones, when the front wear as they do sooner than the rears even after rotating them, buy one new one and use old one as a spare and use spare as a used.
That's been my theory and works great till you get a car with space savers.

another way to look at it--

If you have rotated your 5 tyres and they're near replacement, if you do get a puncture you will be putting on a spare that needs replacing,,

    or,

any late D2 or early D3 that's been lucky in the flat tyre department will have a brand new spare waiting to be used-- thats out of date. My last D2 had a brand new from the factory Michelin on the rear,, but it was over ten years old,,

    would you run that?

tyres are worth every cent you can spend on them, from the time you first pop them on a rim they dont stop working untill you roll them off,, even pistons get to rest at night

Not even close to a debate. No shades of grey at all.

All 5 tyres have to be the same for offroad tourers.

Definitely five....it's a long walk home compared to a few extra dollars for the right tyre.
