			hand brake problem

					Hi All
I hope some one can help. tonight when engaging my hand brake it made the normal motor noise followed by a loud squeel the hand brake light flashed and the amber one flashed as well. the car would not move the brake was stuck on, so I removed the cover behing the hb lever and pulled the emergency cable so I could move my car into the garage. I rang a mate and he mentioned it may be the modulator (prob not the right name thou) that activates the brake, but I think this is mounted towards the front of car and the noise seemed to come from the right back wheel, and it did aply the brake just cant release it.

I hope some one can shead some light

PS is it safe to drive around with the hb disengaged ? I wont be parking on any steep hills, can the brake just come on when driving?

My d3 did the same thing, mine was full of crap in the brake assy it self. should be cleaned and adjusted when serviced., pulling that emergency release takes fair bit of effort, feels like the cable is going to break. I certainly would not be putting it back on.
 Good luck Ken

					You have had a screamer!

Should be ok once released. Usually just needs a clean and adjust. Mud/dust gets between the shoe and the pads causing it to get out of adjustment and can't engage properly.

Check bodsys brake bible on DISCO3.CO.UK - Dedicated to Discovery 3 and LR3 Owners and Enthusiasts there should be instructions there for clean and adjust, otherwise it is the dealer.

			D3 Handbrake screaming

Had the same problem in my trip around Australia recently. I had LR Perth look at it. It appears that dirt and dust collects in the shoe and the result was one complete bare handbrake shoe. They said that there is a rubber grommett? which can be removed and the dirt should be hosed out periodically which should prevent the problem occuring. Will ensure during service that they perform this procedure. It was over $300 to repair only 1 side!

Oh no! Why didn't I read this earlier ??!! Just got my squealer fixed at the stealer. They replaced the entire park brake module - $1052.83 for the part alone, plus labour on top of that

I hope that it really did need replacement and I wasn't ripped off!!
